June 2008
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL
AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE
OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 08E-A02: M5 and M6 with S85 OBD Communication
MODEL
M5, M6 with S85 produced from 9/12/06 up to 7/24/07
SITUATION
A software error in the DME control module may cause communication
incompatibility with certain generic OBD scanner tools.
The original DME program would not cause any drivability problems.
In order to correct this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to reprogram the DME control module on all affected vehicles. With the completion of this recall, the software of the affected vehicles will be updated as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding,
Individualization, Programming), Procedure B.
A copy of the customer letter is included.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Emissions Recall Campaign involves M5 and M6 vehicles with S85 engines which were produced from 9/12/06 up to 7/24/07.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the
response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
PROCEDURE
Reprogram and recode the complete vehicle using Progman V29.1.1 or higher (target integration level of E060-08-03-525 or higher).
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-365) and with a ball-point pen, print your dealer code (5 digits) on the Recall Completion Label (see illustration). An initial quantity of 5 labels will be sent to all BMW automotive centers. Peel the label from its backing and affix it to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to the windshield.
For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD 92-084, see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California) once the Recall on their vehicle has been completed.
Note:
Additional labels can be ordered on line at BMW TIS.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
The repair described in this bulletin is covered under warranty regardless of time or mileage. Reimbursement for this Recall will be via normal claim entry utilizing the information shown.
