PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace Front Crankshaft Radial Seal

MODEL
E60, E63, E64 with the S85 engine produced from 02/06/2007 to 03/02/2007

SITUATION
On affected vehicles the front crankshaft radial seal may have been fitted incorrectly. Depending on the seal positioning the sealing surface may wear and cause an oil leak.

Customers will be impressed when you return their cars with a full tank of gas. Reimbursement information for the vehicle fueling can be found in the Warranty portion of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E60 M5, E63 M6, and E64 M6 vehicles with S85 engines which were produced from 02/06/2007 to 03/02/2007.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

On affected vehicles replace the front crankshaft radial seal following the procedure described below.

PROCEDURE

Follow instruction in TIS - RA 11 14 005 Replace the front crankshaft radial seal (S85)

Refer to SI B04 18 05 and SI B04 28 01 for the special tools used in this repair.

Begin with the preliminary labor operations:

- RA 17 35 000 - Remove fan cowl with electric fan

- RA 11 23 010 - Remove vibration damper

- RA 17 11 000 - Remove radiator





Drill a 3 mm hole in the radial seal Screw in special tool 23 0 490 and remove seal

Important!
Remove any chips or drill shavings immediately





Remove any remnants of sealant from the sealant outlet (1) left and right sides. Apply a small bead of silicon sealant to both the left and right sides the sealant outlet (1)
(Drei Bond 1209 or substitutes: 3M 8861, or Wurth RTV # 0890 913-SS)





Install special tool 11 5 331 and secure with screws (1)

Important!
Pay attention to dowel pin.





Push special tool 11 7 231 onto tool 11 5 331 in the direction as shown by the arrow.

Installation:

Remove the support ring from the replacement radial shaft seal

Important!
The sealing lip of a radial shaft seal is highly sensitive and must not be kinked or damaged
Do not touch this sealing lip





Push the radial shaft seal (1) uniformly onto special tool 11 5 331 by way of the fitting aid tool 11 7 231

Position the radial shaft seal approx. 5 mm away from the crankcase

Remove special tool 11 7 231





Carefully press in the radial shaft seal using special tools 11 5 332 and 11 5 333

The setting time of the radial shaft seal, before operating the engine, is approx. one hour.





Reassembly: When installing the vibration damper (1) the securing stress bolts (2) must be replaced





Using special tool 11 0 280 torque the bolts in the following sequence per TIS 11 23 1AZ
Initial torque of 25 Nm
Joining torque of 60 Nm
1. Angle torque rotation of 40deg;

2. Angle torque rotation of 40deg;

Reassemble and check engine oil

Top off if necessary.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 492 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-320) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 492 printed on the label and,





c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
