Noise, Location, Convertible Top Closed

Localizing Noises At The Convertible Top

Localize the noises with the vehicle stationary or during the test drive. If the noise occurs during the test drive, run the checks in the following list.

IMPORTANT: For reasons related to road safety, run the test drive with two person.

Procedure
If the noise changes or disappears during the check, enter the number of the measure specifically designed for the purpose in the key field in the next test step. Repair instructions are displayed for each measure.

Checks with the vehicle stationary

Reproduce, check noise Measure no.
Rollover protection system buzzes: The rollover 1
protection system can be excited by knocking
from the rear, thus reproducing the noise, see
illustration.

Fresh-air grille grates on the contact surface 2
to the A-pillar trim: The noise can be reproduced
by pressing against both components.

Convertible top linkage rattles: Move the convertible 3
top into the servicing position and check whether
the rubber cap is present on the support of the
main pillar, see illustration.

Rattling noise from the convertible top compartment: 4
Check the convertible top compartment for loose
foreign bodies or loose clips and cable ties.

Grating noise as of 10-50 km/H due to loose seal 5
at the ends of the tensioning bar: Check that the
seal on the tensioning bar is correctly and firmly
seated.

Rattling noise from the rear window, usually at a 6
speed above 140 km/H: Can be simulated by knocking
above the rear window, see illustration.

Rattling noise from the rear area of the convertible 7
top: To locate the noise, attach a piece of felt to
the adjusting screw on the main pillar and check whether
the noise still occurs, see illustration.

Rattling noise from the rear end of the convertible top, 8
usually on poor road surfaces: can be simulated by
knocking on the rollover protection trim panel
(with tensioning bar opened). Check that the trim
panel on the rollover protection is correctly and
firmly seated.

Rattling noise from the front section of the 9
convertible top: Check that the cover on the
tensioning bar is correctly and firmly seated.

Checks while the vehicle is being driven

Check if the noise occurs Measure no.
Tensioning bar grates on the convertible top 10
compartment lid trim strip: Place material
or strips of paper (from a roll) in the
entire area between the tensioning bar seal
and the trim strip. This decouples the
tensioning bar seal from the trim strip.

Rattling / grating noise from the wind 11
deflector: Press the roof flat by hand
while the vehicle is being driven to the
height of the wind deflector (in the center,
left/right a the edge).

Chest strip of the side panel rattles: 12
Hold onto the chest strip while the vehicle
is being driven.

Whizzing noise from the ornamental grille 13
between the roll bars: Unclip the grille
between the roll bars.

The noise could not be localized on the 99
basis of the list. Continue test module.
