Interior Moulding / Trim: Testing and Inspection

The following article has been updated by technical service bulletin (TSB) 51 23 08. This TSB was originally published in July 2008, most recently revised in September 2010.

SUBJECT
Clicking Noise from the Bottom of the A-pillar

MODEL
E88 (1 Series Convertible) produced up to 3/2008

SITUATION
A clicking noise may be heard from the bottom of the A-pillar where it meets the top of the instrument panel, when driving over rough surfaces.

CAUSE
Excess urethane from the windshield installation has cemented the A-pillar trim panel to the windshield, and therefore it does not move with the instrument panel as the body flexes.

PROCEDURE
The September 2010 procedure from the TSB is included immediately below:

The problem has been integrated into ISTA diagnostics. Follow the diagnosis test plan, using the latest ISTA version.

In "Information Search", select the "Function Structure" tab. Select Body, Mechanisims, noises, instrument Panel, then press "Start Search". Select test plan "B5116_E87MECH1 noise from dashboard, center console".

The July 2008 procedure from the TSB is included immediately below:

1. Determine whether the bottom of the A-pillar trim is incorrectly secured to the windshield by pressing on the bottom of the trim, moving it back and forth. If the trim is difficult to move, it is likely secured to the windshield.
2. If the trim appears to be secured to the windshield, carefully remove the trim to separate it from the windshield. Do not use excessive force while removing the trim; otherwise, the windshield could become cracked.
3. Remove any excess windshield urethane from the trim, and reinstall it or replace it if it has become damaged.
