April 2008
Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace the Chain Tensioning Rail Bearing Bolt

MODEL
E60, E70, E83, and E9x vehicles with the N51, N52K, and N54 engines produced from 10/22/2007 to 01/25/2008

SITUATION
Due to a manufacturing defect, the tensioning rail bearing bolt could come loose and cause damage to the engine.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E60, E70, E83 and E9x vehicles with N51, N52K, and N54 engines which were produced from 10/22/2007 to 01/25/2008.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Replace the bearing bolt.

PROCEDURE

The TIS repair instruction RA 11 31 051 Replace the timing chain has links to all the necessary repair steps listed below.

1. In order to access the bearing bolt, the screw plug on the engine block must first be removed (replaced during reassembly). To do this, the vibration damper is first removed as described in the TIS Repair Instruction: RA 11 23 010 Remove and refit/replace the vibration damper.

2.Loosen the timing chain tensioner, but do not remove it completely from the cylinder head. Stop loosening the chain tensioner as soon as it is free of tension. This will hold the chain tensioning rail in place when replacing the bearing bolt. Please proceed as described in RA 11 31 090 Remove and refit/replace the tensioner piston.

3. For the removal and replacement of the bearing bolt, proceed as described in the TIS repair instruction RA 11 31 051 Replace the timing chain. Follow the subsection instruction "Release screw (1) on chain drive at bottom" (as shown in pictures R11 6383 and R11 6385). Replace the
bearing bolt (torque 20 NM) and then install the new screw plug (torque 25 NM).

4. The chain tensioner can now be removed to install the new gasket sealing ring (no gasket is used during engine manufacturing) and reinstalled (torque 55 Nm). Complete the reassembly following the steps listed in the above-mentioned TIS repair instructions.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 513. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-225) and:

A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1):

B. Punch out code number 513 (2), printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
