SUBJECT
Rear Window(s) Inoperative

MODEL
E93 (3 Series Convertible) produced up to 7/07

SITUATION
One or both of the rear side windows may become permanently inoperative.

Often this will occur immediately after opening the retractable hardtop (RHT) or lowering the rear windows using the one-touch convenience feature.

An unpleasant odor may also be present immediately after the window(s) becomes inoperative.

CAUSE
A software error in the junction box electronics (JBE) may allow current to continue to flow to the rear window motors for a short time even after the end stop has been reached, resulting in damage to the motor(s).

CORRECTION
A software update to correct this is available as of Progman V26.1.1.

NOTE:
This software update is not applicable for vehicles in this production range which have had the JBE replaced previously with part number 61 35 9 134 485. This part number JBE already has the updated software installed.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the window regulator with the affected motor(s) per repair instruction RA 51 37 000.

2. Inspect the regulator for signs of damage resulting from the motor failure.

3. Replace the window regulator only if any obvious damage exists.

4. The affected window motor(s) should then be replaced.

5. Re-install the window regulator assembly.

6. Program the vehicle using Progman V26.1.1 or higher.
