Lighting - 'Rear Light Failure' Message Displayed

SUBJECT
"Rear Light Failure" Displayed in Check Control

MODEL
E92, E93 (3 Series)

Vehicles produced from August, 31 2006 to July, 2 2007.

SITUATION
"Rear light failure" is displayed in the check control and one of the brake force display lights is inoperative.

CAUSE
Light bulb failure or loose contact between light bulb and socket.

CORRECTION
Replace the faulty bulb and install updated bulb sockets.

In case of a customer complaint, perform the following procedure.





Read the fault code memory of the vehicle. If either of the following fault codes is present in the FRM 2 (Footwell Module), then proceed as follows.

^ A8C0 "Brake force display right defective".

^ A8BF "Brake force display left defective".

Note:
The brake force display bulb and socket are located in the rear lamp housing located on the trunk lid.





1. Remove the affected brake force display bulb and socket (1) per repair instructions RA 63 21 057.

2. Confirm that the brake force display bulb (1) is not blown. Use a 12 volt power supply if necessary.





3. If the bulb (1) is not found to be faulty then replace both sockets (2) with updated P/N 63 217 207 528.

4. If the bulb (1) is found to be faulty then replace the bulb with P/N 63 21 7 160 788 and both sockets (2) with P/N 63 21 7 207 528.

Note:
All vehicles produced prior to July, 3 2007 will need both sockets replaced regardless of the condition of the bulb.

Please refer to the latest KSD for all applicable labor operations and allowances.

If the appropriate labor operation is not contained in KSD, then a work time labor operation should be used.
