Door Opening/Closing Symptom Diagnosis

E60, E61 (5 Series)
E63, E64 (6 Series)

SITUATION
Symptom diagnosis has been expanded to include various customer complaints relating to door system problems that may be reported.

Symptom diagnosis includes topics from the following categories:

^ Door does not close or does not open

^ Door lock opens spontaneously

Symptom diagnosis is updated periodically, so always use the current DIS version when performing symptom diagnosis.

CAUSE
Various root causes can be identified using the Symptom Diagnosis Test plans.

The information in symptom diagnosis is based on technician feedback and experiences dealing with these symptoms.

PROCEDURE

1. Identify the exact customer complaint.

2. Perform a short test using the latest version of diagnostic software.

Procedure 1 (via Fault Symptom selection)

3. Page right to the "Diagnosis Fault symptom selection" screen.

4. Select "5120 Locking systems".

5. Next, select "512032 Malfunctions at locking system / door hinges"

6. Once the symptom is selected, press the "Transfer" button to move the symptom into the "Accepted symptom" field.

7. Page right to "Diagnosis Test Plan".

8. Select "Test Plan", shown on the screen.

9. Page right to start "Test Plan".

10. Follow the test plan through to the end for the appropriate recommendation and Diagnostic code.

Procedure 2 (via Function Selection)

3. Select the "Function Selection" button.

4. Select "Complete Vehicle"/ "Body".

5. There are 2 paths which you can follow to get to the applicable test plans:

^ Locking and Security Functions / Door Mechanism / Mechanism, Locking system, Door Hinges

^ Locking and Security Functions / Mechanism, Noises, Optical Elements / Mechanism / Mechanism, Locking System, Door Hinge

6. Select the "Test plan" button.

7. Follow the test plan through to the end for the appropriate recommendation and Diagnostic code.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Information only.

Warranty claims may be denied:

1. If not supported by diagnostic test plans (transferred via FASTA). Be sure to include the "Diagnostic code" in the comments section of the warranty claim if one exists.

2. If the latest diagnostic software is not used. Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Please refer to the latest KSD for all applicable labor operations and allowances.

If the appropriate labor operation is not contained in KSD, then a work time labor operation should be used.
