SUBJECT
Rattling Noise from Center Display

MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series sedan and sports wagon) produced up to June 2007

E63, E64 (6 Series coupe and convertible) produced up to June 2007

SITUATION
A rattling noise may be heard from behind the center display or lower windshield area when the vehicle is driven over bumps.

CAUSE
The retaining bolts for the cross strut brace on the center support bracket, or on the strut towers, have worked themselves loose. In some cases, the threaded holes of the aluminum center support bracket have become damaged.

PROCEDURE

1. Inspect all 4 bolts which secure the cross strut brace to the body of the vehicle. 2 of the bolts (shown by the arrow) secure the brace to the center support bracket and the other 2 secure the ends of the bar to the strut towers.

2. If any of these bolts are loose, all 4 should be replaced with new bolts (PN 51 71 7 063 831). Torque new bolts to an increased torque specification of 27Nm.

3. If this 27 Nm torque cannot be achieved on the bolts securing the brace to the center support bracket, replace the center support bracket (PN 51 61 7 010 593) according to Repair Instruction RA 51 71 373.
