Timing Chain: Service and Repair
11 31 051 - Replacing timing chain (N54)
Special tools required:
- 00 9 140 00 9 140 Angle-of-Rotation Measurement Disc 3/4" Connection
- 11 0 300 11 0 300 Plug Mandrel
- 11 4 280 11 4 280 Gauge
- 11 8 180 11 8 180 Holder
- 11 8 660 11 8 660 Holder
- 11 9 260 11 9 260 Counter Support with Screw Connection
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove fan cowl Service and Repair
- Remove cylinder head cover Service and Repair
- Remove all spark plugs
- Remove chain tensioner Service and Repair.
- Remove crankshaft radial seal Service and Repair at front
- Remove belt tensioner Service and Repair
- Remove vibration damper Service and Repair
- Remove inlet and exhaust adjustment units Service and Repair
Remove fastener (1) in direction of arrow.
Installation:
Install fastener (1) with bore facing outwards.
Secure engine in firing TDC position of cylinder no. 1 with special tool 11 0 300 11 0 300 Plug Mandrel.
Mark flywheel and transmission housing with a line (1).
Note:
Picture shows automatic transmission.
Do not remove special tool 11 4 280 11 4 280 Gauge.
Procedure, transmission removed.
Secure flywheel (crankshaft) with special tool 11 9 260 11 9 260 Counter Support with Screw Connection.
Secure flywheel (crankshaft) with special tool 11 8 660 11 8 660 Holder to transmission.
Mount special tool 11 8 180 11 8 180 Holder on manual transmission with bolts (1).
Secure flywheel in direction of arrow.
Important!
To release central bolt (1), remove special tool 11 0 300 11 0 300 Plug Mandrel.
Release central bolt with a 3/4" socket (1) and if necessary with a 3/4" extension (2).
Tightening torque 11 21 1AZ 11 21 Crankshaft and Bearings.
Remove central bolt with hub towards front.
Open plug (1).
Tightening torque 11 31 6AZ 11 31 Camshaft.
Open plug (1).
Tightening torque 11 31 6AZ 11 31 Camshaft.
Release screw (1) on chain drive at top.
Tightening torque 11 31 2AZ 11 31 Camshaft.
Release screw (1) on chain drive at bottom.
Tightening torque 11 31 3AZ 11 31 Camshaft.
Release screws (1).
Tightening torque 11 31 2AZ 11 31 Camshaft.
Remove timing chain module with timing chain and sprocket wheel upwards in direction of arrow.
Important!
Note installation direction of sprocket wheel (2).
Collar (see arrow) on sprocket wheel (2) points to crankshaft.
Incorrect assembly will result in engine damage.
Pull timing chain (1) upwards until sprocket wheel (2) engages chain guide (3).
Install timing chain (1) and sprocket wheel (2) in this position.
Installation:
Always hold timing chain under tension.
Timing chain (1) may jam on chain module (3).
Important!
The N54 engine requires special friction plates between the friction surfaces.
The engine will incur damage if the friction plates are damaged or are not fitted.
Friction plates (1 and 2) are clipped into place on sprocket wheel/oil pump module.
Make sure friction plate (3) is in correct installation position.
Push on friction plate (1) without retainers.
Important!
The N54 engine requires special friction plates between the friction surfaces.
The engine will incur damage if the friction plates are damaged or are not fitted.
Insert chain module from above and secure with bolt (1).
Make sure gear wheels (2) are in correct installation position.
Insert hub (3) with friction plate.
Tightening torque 11 21 1AZ 11 21 Crankshaft and Bearings.
Secure special tool 00 9 140 00 9 140 Angle-of-Rotation Measurement Disc 3/4" Connection with magnet to engine carrier (1).
Secure central bolt with special tool 00 9 140 00 9 140 Angle-of-Rotation Measurement Disc 3/4" Connection.
Remove crankshaft radial seal Service and Repair at front.
Install inlet and exhaust adjustment units Service and Repair.
Install chain tensioner Service and Repair.
Crank engine twice.
Check timing Testing and Inspection.
Assemble engine.
