SUBJECT
Trunk Lid Intermittently Does Not Open or Latch

MODEL
E90 (3 Series)

SITUATION
Intermittently the trunk lid does not pop open when using the remote, or latch when closing. If the vehicle is driven and the trunk is not closed fully, a Check Control message will be displayed in the instrument cluster.

CAUSE
The trunk lid is out of adjustment.

PROCEDURE

Do not replace parts.

1. Check for proper trunk lid adjustment and readjust if necessary. Refer to ISTA Repair Instructions "4162014 Adjusting rear lid". The specifications for the gap measurements are provided in the instructions.

2. [NEW] Ensure that the lid is not adjusted higher than the panels.

3. [NEW] Do not adjust the body/hinge bolts.

4. [NEW] Lube the trunk gaskets with a non-silicone light rubber treatment such as "Rubber Care". Note: do not use heavy clear grease such as "Sil-Glide".

5. Adjust the rear lock and detent buffers per ISTA Repair Instructions "5124004 Adjusting rear lid lock".

Note:
When using the remote to unlock the trunk, the lid should pop up at least 3/16 of an inch. It is normal when closing the trunk lid that some light pressure needs to be applied. The trunk lid will not always latch when allowing it to close (drop) unassisted. Ensure that the trunk lid does not rattle or cause noises on a test drive.
