Removing and Installing Engine

11 00 050 - Removing and installing engine (N54)





Special tools required:
- 11 0 000
- 11 5 281
- 11 5 282
- 11 7 310 11 7 310 Spacer
- 11 8 680 11 8 680 Adapter






Important!
Aluminium screws/bolts must be replaced each time they are released.

Aluminium screws/bolts are permitted with and without

colour coding (blue).

For reliable identification:

Aluminium screws/bolts are not magnetic.

Jointing torque and angle of rotation must be observed without fail (risk of damage).





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery negative lead
- Lift engine bonnet/hood into assembly position Procedures
- Drain off engine oil Engine Oil Service
- Remove air filter housing Service and Repair
- Remove fan cowl Service and Repair with electric fan
- Remove radiator Removing and Installing Radiator
- Detach all coolant hoses from engine
- Remove fresh air duct Service and Repair on left and right
- Remove intake air manifold Service and Repair
- Detach vacuum line from brake booster 34 33 071 Replacing Vacuum Hose For Brake Booster
- Unfasten ignition wiring harness 12 51 100 Replacing Wiring Harness Section For Ignition Coil and lay to one side
- Unfasten engine wiring harness 12 51 001 Replacing Wiring Harness Section for Engine and lay to one side
- Remove exhaust system.
- Remove transmission





Support engine with special tool 11 7 310 11 7 310 Spacer on steering gear.





Evacuate A/C system.

Release screws (1) for A/C lines.

Disconnect plug connection (2) on air-conditioning compressor.

Do not remove air-conditioning compressor.





Release bolts (1 and 2) from power steering pump bracket.

Set power steering pump down on front axle carrier.

Note:
Do not disconnect hydraulic lines.

If Dynamic Drive optional extra is fitted, release bracket.





Disconnect fuel lines (1 and 2).

Close off fuel line (1) with special tool 11 5 281.

Close off fuel line (2) with special tool 11 5 282.





Secure special tool 11 8 680 11 8 680 Adapter to lifting eye on transmission side.

Press locking pin (1) in direction of arrow until locking balls (2) are loose.

Secure special tool 11 8 680 11 8 680 Adapter to lifting eye, release locking pin (1).

Installation Note:
Special tool 11 8 680 11 8 680 Adapter is correctly installed when locking balls (2) are arrested.

Special tool 11 8 680 11 8 680 Adapter is firmly secured to lifting eye.





Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from special tool 11 8 680 11 8 680 Adapter in eye (1).





Screw in towing hook (1).

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from engine crane.

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from the designated mounting eyelets (2) only.

Unscrew left and right engine mounts.

Lift engine out with crane.





Installation Note:
Secure special tool 11 7 310 11 7 310 Spacer to steering gear.





Assemble engine.

Check function of DME.
