SUBJECT
Backrest Seat Cover Material Loose
MODEL
E93 (3 Series Convertible) produced up to 9/2008
SITUATION
The outside edge of the backrest seat cover may pull free from the backrest frame, just in front of the release lever. When this occurs, the underlying foam cushion (1) is visible.
CAUSE
Insufficient retention force on the seat cover-retaining flange
CORRECTION
[NEW] Build up the retaining flange with felt tape, and remove excess seat covering material to increase the retention force.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the release lever trim on the affected seat per Repair Instruction RA 52 14 ...
2. The hook (1) on the retaining flange has partially pulled out of the retention channel and associated retaining lug (2). If it is still being held in place by any of the 4 retaining lugs, it should be pulled free from them.
3. Pull the retaining flange away from the seatback and apply felt tape to the entire length of the backside of the plastic retainer (1).
4. NEW Using a sharp knife or razor blade, remove 1.0-1.5 mm of excess seat cover material (shaded area) between the stitching and the hook on the retaining flange.
5. Seat the retaining flange back into the channel. Ensure that all 4 of the retaining lugs engage the hook portion of the retaining flange.
6. If inadequate tension is present after the addition of the felt tape, a second layer of tape may be required.
