Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL
AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.
Service Action: M3 S65 - Thermostat Housing Inspection
M3 with S65 engine produced from 05/08/09 up to 06/05/09
The retaining springs of the thermostat housing quick-release couplings for the coolant hoses may not be locked correctly. This situation may result in a coolant leak.
This Service Action involves M3 Sedan (E90), Coupe (E92) and Convertible (E93) vehicles with S65 engines which were produced from 05/08/2009 up to 06/05/2009.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSNet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
Check the thermostat housing quick-release hose couplings (on both hoses).
If the retaining springs are firmly resting in the housing tabs, as indicated by the arrows, the installation is correct and no more action is required.
If the retaining springs stay in the position indicated by the arrows (springs do not lie flush in the tabs and channels), then the thermostat housing must be replaced.
To replace the thermostat housing, follow Repair Instruction RA 11 53 00 from BMW TIS.
This Service Action has been assigned code number 546. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-366) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 546(2) printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
