Removal and Replacement




11 12 100 - Removing and installing cylinder head (M57T2)





Special tools required:
- 00 9 120 00 9 120 Torque Angle Measuring Dial
- 11 6 050 11 6 050 Socket Wrench Socket WAF 10






Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove cylinder head cover Service and Repair
- Drain coolant
- Remove A/C compressor drive belt
- Remove alternator drive belt
- Remove vacuum pump
- Remove camshafts Replacing Both Camshafts





Important!
Fit new cylinder head screws.
Do not wash off bolt coating.
There must be no oil or coolant in the pocket holes (risk of cracking).
Protect alternator against engine oil and coolant. (Risk of damage).
Cover alternator with suitable apparatus.
Assemble charge air hoses without grease and dry.





Slacken bolts (1) and (2) on turbocharger (3).





Slacken clamp (1) and release turbocharger from exhaust manifold.

Installation Note:
Replace clamp.





Release screws (3) on cylinder head at rear.





Remove all finger rockers (1) and set down in order.
Remove all compensating elements (2) and set down in order.

Important!
Worn rockers may only be reused on the same grooves of the camshaft.





Release screws (1).





Unfasten cylinder head bolts from outside to inside in following sequence 14 ... 1.

Installation:
Fit new cylinder head screws.





Important!
The glow plugs protrude at the sealing face and may be damaged when the cylinder head is put down.
If necessary, remove glow plugs with special tool 11 6 050 11 6 050 Socket Wrench Socket WAF 10.
Tightening torque 12 23 2AZ [1][2]Glow Plug System.
Remove cylinder head.





Remove cylinder head gasket (1).

Installation:
Observe number of holes (2) of cylinder head gasket.

Remove all traces of oil and coolant from all tapped blind holes (3) in crankcase.

Clean sealing surface (4).






Note:
Clean sealing face of cylinder head and engine block.
Remove gasket remnants with hardwood spatula.
If the piston clearance is changed (e.g. replacing piston)
the cylinder head gasket thickness Service and Repair must be recalculated.





Note:
Joints between timing case cover and engine block are sealed with sealing strips stuck on as standard.
It is not necessary to apply a permanently elastic sealing compound.





Check dowel sleeve (1) for damage and replace if necessary.
Transitions (2) must be absolutely free of grease.
Fit new cylinder-head seal.





Carefully fit cylinder head.
Fit new cylinder head screws.
Tighten down the cylinder-head bolts in order 1 ... 14.
Tightening torque 11 12 1AZ 11 12 Cylinder Head with Cover.





Use special tool 00 9 120 for torsion angle tightening.





Tighten down screws (1).






Installation Note:
Worn rockers may only be reused on the same grooves of the camshaft.

Oil camshaft bearings and bearing caps.

Install all finger rockers and compensating elements.





Assemble engine.
