23 00 018 - Removing and installing transmission (GS6-53BZ) (S65)

Special tools required:
- 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit
- 11 9 990 11 9 990 Locating Fixture
- 21 2 240 21 2 240 Grease Scraper Ring
- 23 4 050 23 4 050 Universal Transmission Bracket

Important!
After completing work:

- Check transmission oil level 00 11 229 Oil Change In Manual Gearbox.
Use only the approved transmission oil.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the manual transmission.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery 12 00 ... Instructions For Disconnecting and Connecting Battery
- Remove both suspension cross-braces 51 71 345 Removing and Installing/Replacing Left (or Right) Suspension Cross-Brace
- Remove propeller shaft 26 11 000 Removing and Installing Complete Propeller Shaft (Constant-Velocity Joint)
- Remove front underbody protection Removing and Installing/Replacing Front Underbody Protection

Disconnect plug connection (1) from reversing light switch.

Release cable from retainers.

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Remove heat shield for crankshaft pulse generator.

Disconnect plug connection (2).

Release screws (3) and (4).

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Release screws (2).

Suspend holder (3) to one side.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 23 00 1AZ 23 00 Transmission In General (GS653BZ 6 Speed SMG).

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Note:
Pressure line of clutch slave cylinder remains connected.

Important!
Relieve tension on clutch slave cylinder slowly; otherwise air will be drawn in through sealing sleeve.

Unscrew nuts.

Remove clutch slave cylinder.

Tightening torque 21 52 5AZ Specifications

Supporting transmission:

Support transmission with special tools 23 4 050 23 4 050 Universal Transmission Bracket, 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit.

Secure transmission to mounting with tensioning strap (1).

Tasks are described in Transmission bracket 23 .. ... Universal BMW Transmission Take-Up.

After completion of work, check transmission oil level.

Remove transmission cross-member 22 31 050 Replacing Cross Member For Transmission Mounting.

Lever out retainer (1).

Disconnect shift rod (2).

Installation Note:
Grease shift rod.

Grease, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids.

Make sure shims (3) are in correct position.

Unlock bearing pin (1) in direction of arrow and remove.

Lift out shift arm.

Installation Note:
Grease bearing pins (1).

Grease, refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids.

Lever support bearing (1) with a short screwdriver out of mounting.

Installation Note:
Grease bearing pin of shift arm.

Fit support bearing (1) with opening (2) towards top rear onto holder.

Bolt special tool 11 9 990 11 9 990 Locating Fixture with bolt (1) to front axle carrier.

Bolt (2) is required to secure the engine in the correct position.

Adjust special tool 11 9 990 11 9 990 Locating Fixture until dimension A=50 mm is obtained between front axle carrier and tensioner.

Disconnect plug connection (1) of zero gear sensor (on transmission).

Release screws (1) and (2).

Important!
Bolts (2) are longer than bolts (1)

Tightening torque 23 00 1AZ 23 00 Transmission In General (GS653BZ 6 Speed SMG).

Note:
Bolt (3) must not be released.

Bolt (3) is for securing the starter.

Important!
Do not allow transmission to hang on transmission input shaft when removing and installing, as the clutch disc will be deformed.

To avoid damaging the sound insulation (1) on the bulkhead, raise the transmission after withdrawing the transmission pin from the pilot bearing against the direction of engine lowering to 0°.

For safety, a protective film (2) can also be placed between the transmission and the sound insulation.

Installation:
Pay attention to correction position of dowel sleeves.

Replace damaged dowel sleeves.

Ensure correct position of cover plate.

Installation:
Remove release unit and release lever Service and Repair and clean.

Installation:
Check lubrication of transmission input shaft for sticky consistency. If grease is sticky, replace clutch plate 21 21 500 Removing and Installing/Replacing Clutch (GS6-53BZ).

Check clutch plate for friction rust in taper splines and replace if necessary 21 21 500 Removing and Installing/Replacing Clutch (GS6-53BZ).

Mechanically remove old grease and lining abrasion from the taper splines of the clutch disk (with a cloth).

Installation Note:
Greasing specification:

- Remove release bearing and release lever.
- Push on grease scraper ring 21 2 240 21 2 240 Grease Scraper Ring as far as it will go.
- Grease splines (1) of input shaft with a brush. Refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids.
- Detach grease scraper ring.
