SUBJECT
Automatic Tailgate Operating Problems

MODEL
E70 (X5) with automatic tailgate (option 316)

SITUATION

Intermittently or permanently, the rear tailgate may not operate in one or both directions, or only opens or closes partway. Faults may or may not be stored in the HKL (automatic tailgate) control module or the JBE (Junction Box Electronics). Typical faults may be A2AB, A2B2, A2B3 and A2BB in the HKL or A6E2 in the IBE.

CAUSE

Wiring harness damage in the area of the right side of the rear tailgate.

The wiring harness damage may be either on the body side within the D-pillar, or on the tailgate side.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the right side rear D-pillar trim, and lower the rear section of the roof lining to gain access to the tailgate wiring harness. Closely inspect the wiring harness for damage (felt tape may need to be removed). Note that the damage can be extremely small.

2. Repair the wiring as required (normally, it is sufficient to reinsulate the wire using electrical tape).

3. Using felt tape, apply edge protection where necessary to prevent any further harness damage

4. If no wiring damage can be found, remove the trim panel on the right side of the tailgate and repeat the process.

5. Refer to the attachment for typical examples.
