SUBJECT
Creaking Noises from the B-Pillar Trim

MODEL
E70

Produced to November 8, 2012

SITUATION
The lower half of the B-pillar trim can make a creaking noise when driving.

CAUSE
The two upper openings for the securing tabs on the bottom half of the B-pillar, are too small to allow the two barbs of the upper trim to interlock.

PROCEDURE
Confirm the creaking noise is coming from the middle of the B-pillar by applying moderate pressure to the upper and lower halves of the B-pillar trims, where they meet.

Note:
The pictures in this repair procedure were taken of the passengers side B-pillar (with option code 04NB for 4 zone air conditioning).

1. Remove the lower B-pillar trim from the affected side. Refer to ISTA Repair Instruction 51 43 150 "Removing and installing or replacing trim panel for left or right door panel (bottom)".

2. Locate the two openings at the top of the lower B-pillar trim.

3. Place the trim face down on a clean work surface. Modify the two rectangular openings at the upper edge of their opening, by carefully filing/grinding away 0.5 mm from the top of the rectangular opening.

Note:
Be careful not to file too much from the opening. Test fit the modified bottom trim to the upper half of the B-pillar trim. Confirm the two half pieces are now interlocking, and then proceed to reassemble the remaining parts in the reverse order of their removal.
