SUBJECT
Service Action: E70 N52K Coolant Hose Seal Plug Retrofit

MODEL
E70 (X5 3.0) with the N52K produced from 4/27/2009 through 4/29/2009

SITUATION
Due to a running part production change, a branch of the upper radiator cooling hose has been sealed. The sealing plug may start to leak over time, which would result in a coolant leak.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E70 (X5 3.0) vehicles with the N52K engine which were produced from 4/27/2009 through 4/29/2009.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based upon
the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

Only carry out repairs when the engine has cooled down.

1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by opening the radiator cap.

2. Close the radiator cap to prevent coolant from escaping during repair.

3. Remove the air intake duct.

4. Remove the transverse reinforcement bracket (1) to gain better access to the upper radiator hose at the thermostat.

5. When reinstalling, replace the 4 screws (P/N 17 11 7 536 971) [joining torque 10 Nm, followed by a torque angle of 90°].

6. Remove the clamp (1) from the old seal plug and remove the plug (2).

7. Slide on new sealing cap P/N 17 12 7 598 004.

8. Pull the release on the new seal cap to allow the clamp to close. The release should be removed from the vehicle.

9. Reinstall the transfer reinforcement bracket and intake port.

10. Check the coolant level and top off if necessary.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 542. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-366) and:

A. Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in
the middle of the label (1);

B. Punch out code number 542 printed on the label
and,

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
