SI B12 18 09Engine Electrical Systems
May 2009
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL
AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.
SUBJECT
Service Action: Program Control Units (DME DMTL Diagnosis)
MODEL
E70 X5 3.0i and X5 xDrive 30i with the N52K engine produced 5/23/2006 to 4/04/2009
SITUATION
An incorrect tank leakage diagnosis may occur due to a software error.
The Service Engine Soon (MIL) lamp may be illuminated with the DMTL leakage fault stored, even though there is no fuel system leak.
CAUSE
DME software DMTL diagnostic error
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E70 vehicles with N52K engines which were produced up to 4/04/2009.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the
response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
PROCEDURE
1. Perform a vehicle test.
2. Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.33.2 or later.
3. Continue the vehicle test to complete all rework procedures as listed in the ISTA/P final report and to clear the fault memory.
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to Centernet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.
This Service Action has been assigned code number 540. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-352) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 540 (2) printed on the
label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
