SI 41 02 08Body
September 2008
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.
SUBJECT
Service Action: Remove Excessive Underbody Coating
MODEL
E70 (X5)
E71 (X6)
SITUATION
An excessive amount of underbody coating was inadvertently applied to the area around the left side mounting point for the center support bearing. This excessive coating could result in one of the side fasteners for the center support bearing not fully achieving the specified torque.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves X5 and X6 vehicles which were produced from 8/19/08 - 8/22/08.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Lower the center support bearing, clean off the underbody coating from the left side fastening hole area, and reattach the bearing.
PROCEDURE
1. Place the vehicle on a lift.
2. Remove the exhaust system per Repair Instruction RA 18 00 020.
3. Remove the underbody panels to gain access to the center support bearing.
4. Remove the bolts from the center support bearing to gain access to the left side mounting surface.
5. Identify the area on the left side (1) where the support bearing was mounted and excess undercoating is present. Compare this to the right side (2), which does not have this excess undercoating.
6. Use a plastic scraper and non-volatile cleaners to remove the excess PVC undercoating.
7. If the primer beneath the undercoating is damaged and bare metal is exposed, the area must have self-etching primer applied to it prior to reattaching the support bearing.
8. Reinstall the center support bearing (original bolts may be reused) and all other parts that were removed. Torque bolts to 21Nm.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 527. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-352) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 527 (2), printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
