Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL
AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY
ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.
SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 09V-255: Inspect Rear Brake Discs
MODEL
E70 (X5) xDrive48i
E71 (X6) xDrive50i
SITUATION
Certain rear brake discs were manufactured with small cracks. Over time, a fracture could occur which may result in a reduction in brake performance.
This Recall Campaign involves X5 and X6 vehicles which were produced from May 22, 2009 to June 1, 2009.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
Inspect the stampings of both rear axle brake discs. If necessary, replace the disc(s) as specified under the section marked PROCEDURE in this bulletin.
The stamping of the rear brake discs can be viewed by looking through the spokes of the alloy wheels. If there is any dirt or debris on the rear brake disc, clean the hub of the brake disc with a clean~ dry~ lint- free cloth.
The stamping of both rear brake discs must be inspected.
The stamping follows the BMW part number and logo on the center hub of the brake disc.
If the stamping reads 71 09 135C, the brake disc must be replaced.
If neither rear brake disc is stamped 71 09 135C, then no further action is necessary.
For vehicles in new vehicle inventory, if only one brake disc is stamped 71 09 135C, then the disc may be replaced individually.
For vehicles which have been delivered to the customer, if only one brake disc is stamped 71 09 135C, then both discs must be replaced.
For rear brake disc replacement, refer to Repair Instruction RA 34 21 320 "Removing and installing or replacing both rear brake discs".
