Exterior Mirrors

Exterior Mirrors

Exterior mirrors
As series standard, electrical exterior mirrors are fitted on the E70. The exterior mirrors are adjusted centrally using the mirror-adjustment switch in the driver's door. The electrical exterior mirrors are offered in two equipment variations (Low and High).

Brief description of components
The following components are described for the electrical exterior mirrors:
- Exterior mirror-adjustment switch
- Outside temperature sensor
- Instrument cluster
- Footwell module (FRM)
- Junction box electronics (JBE)
- Position potentiometer
- Exterior mirror folding

Exterior mirror-adjustment switch
The electrical exterior mirrors are adjusted using the exterior mirror-adjustment switch in the driver's door. With the equipment specification "Low", the mirror-adjustment switch directly activates the motors of the electrical exterior mirrors. With the equipment specification "High", the control signals are transferred across the LIN bus to the footwell module (FRM) and the electrical exterior mirrors.

Outside temperature sensor
The outdoor temperature sensor picks up the ambient temperature. The outdoor temperature sensor sends this information directly to the instrument cluster.

Instrument cluster
The instrument cluster processes the information from the outdoor temperature sensor. As of an ambient temperature less than 3 °C, the instrument cluster sends a message across the K-CAN to the control unit responsible. With the equipment specification "Low", the message is sent to the junction box electronics (JBE). In response, the JBE activates the mirror heating electrically. With the equipment specification "High", the message is sent to the footwell module (FRM). The FRM reports this via the LIN bus to the electrical exterior mirrors.

Footwell module (FRM)
The FRM handles the light of the mirror-adjustment switch. With the equipment specification "High", the FRM is connected across the LIN bus with the exterior mirror-adjustment switch and the electrical exterior mirrors.

Junction box electronics (JBE)
The JBE is responsible for the power supply of the electrical exterior mirrors and the exterior mirror-adjustment switch. With the equipment specification "Low", the JBE activates the mirror heating electrically. Depending on the outside temperature, the JBE receives a signal to heat up the mirror heating. The JBE receives the signal through the K-CAN.

Position potentiometer
The mirror glass is adjusted horizontally and vertically by separate motors. There is a position potentiometer on the motors. The potentiometer detects the position of the motors and returns this.

Exterior mirror folding
The exterior mirror consists of a mirror base and mirror body. The motor for exterior mirror folding is installed in the mirror base. The mirror is folded in and out by reversing the motor's direction of rotation.

System functions
The following system functions are described for the electrical exterior mirrors:
- Horizontal and vertical adjustment
- Exterior mirror folding
- Automatic parking function
- Safety functions

Horizontal and vertical adjustment
It is possible to adjust the electrical exterior mirrors from terminal R ON. The electrical exterior mirrors can be adjusted horizontally and vertically using the button pad in the mirror-adjustment switch. A slide switch switches between the driver's side and the front-passenger side. It is only possible to adjust the mirror in either the horizontal or the vertical at any one time. No adjustment is possible with the exterior mirrors folded in. The adjustment time is limited to a maximum of 10 seconds to protect the motors and the mechanisms. Once the maximum adjustment time has elapsed, it is not possible to adjust the exterior mirrors for another 10 seconds.

Exterior mirror folding
To reduce the vehicle width, the exterior mirrors can be folded in towards the side window. It is possible to fold the exterior mirrors from terminal R ON. Folding in the exterior mirrors is triggered by pressing the button for exterior mirror folding in the driver's door. Pressing the button again after the mirror has folded in or out folds it back again in the opposite direction. An anti-repeat circuit is integrated to prevent excessively frequent folding in or out.

Automatic parking function
The automatic parking function is only available in conjunction with the "Driver's mirror memory" optional extra. To improve the view of the kerb when reversing, the mirror glass of the exterior mirror on the front-passenger side is folded downwards. This function can only be performed under the following conditions:
- Slide switch for controlling the exterior mirrors set to the "driver's door" position
- No trailer coupled to the vehicle.

Safety functions
The motors have a blockage detection to provide overload protection for the drives. If the drive is blocked, the current in the motor rises. Each control unit compares the current when a drive is blocked with the starting current in normal operating mode. An obstruction is detected by any difference in the current. The motor is no longer driven.
- Anti-repeat circuit
To provide overheating protection for the motor the mirror folding function is locked after it has been working for a total of 45 seconds. If the anti-repeat circuit is active, the electrical exterior mirrors can be unfolded once more.
- Undervoltage cutout
The power supply for the electrical exterior mirrors is monitored by the junction box electronics (JBE). All electrical exterior mirror functions are locked if the voltage drops below 8.5 Volts. As of an onboard supply voltage of 9 Volts, the functions are available again.
