Tailgate Lamp Leaking

SITUATION

Water leaks into the tailgate lamp. The water can then be seen from outside the vehicle. The water causes internal corrosion, which leads to electrical failure of the lamp and a corresponding Check Control message in the instrument cluster.

CAUSE

Leaking butyl seal between the lamp and the tailgate

CORRECTION

^ Remove the faulty lamp. Clean the residual butyl from the tailgate (refer to Repair Instruction REP 54 37 Removing butyl). Install a replacement lamp together with a soft rubber seal.

^ To avoid a future complaint, remove the remaining lamp. Remove the butyl from the lamp and the tailgate (refer to Repair Instruction REP 54 37 Removing butyl). Reinstall the lamp using a soft rubber seal.
