SUBJECT
Grating Noise from the Instrument Panel

MODEL
[NEW] E70 (X5) produced from 3/7/07 to 6/30/09
[NEW] E71 (X6) produced from 3/7/07 to 6/30/09

SITUATION
Grating or squeaking noises may be present from various locations near the top of the instrument panel.

The noise is most pronounced when:

^ The outside temperature is low and the blower is running. If the blower is turned off the noise is noticeably reduced.

^ Driving over rough roads

CAUSE

The root cause of the noise may be one of the following:

A. The right or left side forward facing vents chafing on the instrument panel

B. The right or left side A-pillar trim chafing on the instrument panel

C. Incomplete plastic welding on the defroster air duct

D. Relative movement between the defroster air duct and its mounting points

E. The instrument panel trim panel supports moving in their locating points.

The problem has been integrated into ISTA diagnostics. Follow the diagnosis test plan, using the latest ISTA version.

In "Information Search", select the "Function Structure" tab. Select Body, Mechanism, Noises, Dashboard and center console noises, then press "Start Search".

Select test plan "B5116_E70MECH1 Dashboard and center console noises"
