Electrical - No Start After Power Electronic Box R and R
SI B 61 03 10General Electrical Systems
March 2010
Technical Service
SUBJECT
Proper Handling of Power Electronics Box (PEB) During Diagnosis or Repairs
MODEL
E72; X6 ActiveHybrid
SITUATION
The engine fails to start after the Power Electronics Box (PEB) was removed and reinstalled, or reconnected during diagnosis (repair) of the hybrid or other non-hybrid systems of the vehicle.
CAUSE
The 56 pin, 12 volt connector, X630001 (1) on the Power Electronics Box (PEB), must be disconnected prior to removal of the PEB.
This connector can only be removed or reconnected when there is no BUS activity present on the CAN lines.
Removing or reconnecting connector X630001 when the BUS systems are active will result in a hard fault and reset of the PEB and consequently a no-start condition.
PROCEDURE
Note:
Always power down the high-voltage system when working with any of the hybrid components.
Only technicians who have successfully completed ST920 BMW ActiveHybrid Technology should work on the hybrid systems.
Ensure that there is no BUS activity in the vehicle before disconnecting the X630001 connector from the PEB. Switch off the ignition and wait (approx. 2 minutes) until the Start/Stop button is no longer illuminated.
If connector X630001 was removed during BUS activity and a no-start condition is experienced, submit a PuMA Case titled "E72 Hybrid No-start" for further troubleshooting/diagnostic procedures.
