Rear Seat Entertainment System

Rear Seat Entertainment System

Rear seat entertainment system
The rear seat entertainment system (RSE) is an optional extra (optional extra 6FF: "DVD system in the rear").
The rear seat entertainment system provides the following functions:
- Operation using remote control
- Playing CDs or DVDs via the DVD drive
- Confirmation for settings made on the rear seat entertainment system as well as display (CDs, DVDs, photos) on an 8-inch TFT colour monitor (rear display)
- Audio playback over the loudspeakers of the vehicle or wired headphones
- Audio playback via headphones with infrared transfer
The infrared transmitter is installed at the rear display.
- Connection for external devices (e.g. video camera, gaming console)
- TV reception in the rear
With deployment of the headphones module as of 09/2007 and in conjunction with optional extra 601 "TV function" or optional extra 602 "On-board monitor with TV", TV reception in the rear is also possible.

The rear seat entertainment system is functionally independent of other entertainment sources available in the vehicle.
Via iDrive, the rear seat entertainment system can be enabled or blocked in the :Settings" menu.

Brief description of components
The following components are described for the rear seat entertainment system:

RSE control unit: Rear Seat Entertainment
The control unit for the rear seat entertainment system (= RSE control unit) is activated via the K-CAN.
The images shown in the rear display are all created in the RSE control unit. All image information is transferred across the LVDS data line from the RSE control unit to the rear display.
The RSE control unit can be switched on as of terminal 30g ON.
After terminal R Off, the RSE control unit can be switched on within the after-run time (approx. 30 minutes).

Remote control for the rear seat entertainment system
The rear seat entertainment system is controlled using a remote control. The signal path corresponds to that of the remote control services. This means that the remote control signals are received by the aerial for remote control service. The signals are sent across the remote control service receiver in the aerial amplifier to the Car Access System (CAS). The CAS outputs the signals as a message on the K-CAN. The RSE control unit is equipment attached to the K-CAN bus.
In the vehicle, only the remote control that has been learned in for this vehicle is operational.

Rear display and infrared transmitter
The rear display serves as the display unit for the RSE control unit. The picture signals are transferred across an LVDS data line from the RSE control unit to the rear display.
A photo diode is installed in the rear display for automatic brightness control.
A micro-switch is installed in the hinge of the rear display.
If the rear display is turned clockwise beyond a certain angle when folded out and during operation, the micro-switch switches the rear display off.
The RSE control unit is not switched off. This means that audio output is still possible.
When the rear display is turned again counterclockwise, the micro-switch switches the rear display on again (precondition: no terminal 15 OFF or shutdown of the rear seat entertainment system via the operating buttons in the meantime).
The infrared transmitter for the infrared transfer to the headphones is also built into the rear display.
The infrared transmitter is supplied with voltage by the RSE control unit. When the RSE control unit is switched on for the first time after terminal 30g ON, the diodes light up. The diodes remain lit up until the RSE control unit is switched on or can be switched on. After terminal R Off, the RSE control unit can be switched on within the after-run time (approx. 30 minutes).

Cinch sockets for connection of external audio and video devices
The cinch socket of the Rear Seat Entertainment cannot be diagnosed. As these sockets are fitted directly in the front panel, a visual inspection is sufficient to check whether there are any defective parts or other foreign bodies in the sockets.

Wire-connected headphones
The connection sockets of the wired headphones are fitted under the rear seat control unit in a separate front panel. They are connected to the control unit across a separate cable.

CD / DVD drive
CDs or DVDs can be played in the drive. The drive can be tested for read errors using an audio test CD. The following control units are involved in the rear seat entertainment system:

VM: Video module
The video module for analog and digital television (video module hybrid DRIVE) receives the TV signals via the TV aerial.
The picture signals are transferred from the video module across a CVBS or RGB line directly to the RSE control unit. The video module sends the TV sound as a message (optical signal) on the MOST bus.

CAS: Comfort Access System
The Car Access System (CAS) uses terminal 30g as follows to effect a time-controlled cutoff of control units and components with power supply: Approximately 30 minutes after terminal R is switched OFF, the power supply for these components is switched off. This prevents the battery from being subjected to excess load by the electrical consumers for too long when the vehicle is out of use.

KHM: headphones module
The headphones module has the task of converting the TV sound for the rear seat entertainment system (RSE), which is sent as an optical signal on the MOST bus, into an analog signal.
TV reception in the rear is only possible with the headphones module (KHM).
The headphones module is only installed in conjunction with the following optional extras:
- Optional extra 6FF "DVD system in the rear"
and
- Optional extra 601 "TV function"
or
- Optional extra 602 "On-board monitor with TV"

System functions
The following system functions are described for the rear seat entertainment system:
- Brightness control
A photo diode in the rear display measures the surrounding brightness for brightness control. The surrounding brightness is compared with the set brightness value. Darkening or brightening adapts the rear display to the surrounding brightness. This ensures good legibility of the display.

General information

Headphones
When the headphones are used with infrared transfer, the connection between the headphones and infrared transmitter must not be interrupted. This means that there must be no obstacles between the headphones and infrared transmitter. The infrared transmitter must not be covered. Unfavorable lighting conditions, e.g. bright light, can diminish reception.

Diagnosis instructions
The rear seat entertainment system (RSE, Rear Seat Entertainment) is to be switched on for the diagnosis.

Teaching the remote control
Teaching the remote control for the rear seat entertainment system can be found in the BMW diagnosis system under "Rear Seat Entertainment".
