Removing and Installing/Replacing Centre Muffler

18 12 045 Removing and installing/replacing centre silencer (N55)

Special tools required:







WARNING:
Risk of burning.
This repair work may only be carried out on an exhaust system which has cooled down.







Necessary preliminary tasks:
E91,E92,E93 only:
- Remove trailing link on rear axle.







Brace the centre silencer using special tool 31 2 220 or a suitable jack.







Unscrew nuts.

Installation note:
Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ.
Replace self-locking nuts.
Replace gasket.







Release bolt and remove holder (1).
Tightening torque 18 20 1AZ.







Release screws along line and remove reinforcement plate (1).







Unscrew nuts.
Take off holder (1).
Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ.







NOTE:
If the separation point is not marked by a punch mark on the pipe, determine the separation point by means of the pipe length on the new centre silencer.
Carry over separation point to faulty centre silencer and mark.
Secure centre silencer against falling off.
Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.







Installation note:
Connect and align the centre silencer with both exhaust pipes using clamps.
Align and tighten clamps.
Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ.







Installation note:
Connect and align centre silencer with both rear silencers using clamps.
Align and tighten clamps.
Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ.







NOTE: Check exhaust system for leaks.
