Exterior Mirrors

Exterior Mirrors

Exterior mirrors
The electrical exterior mirrors are installed as standard. The exterior mirrors are adjusted centrally using the mirror adjustment switch in the driver's door. The electrical exterior mirrors are offered in two equipment specifications (Low and High).

Brief component description
The following components are described for the electrical exterior mirrors:
- Exterior mirror adjustment switch
- Outside temperature sensor
- Instrument cluster
- Footwell module (FRM)
- Junction Box Electronics (JBE)
- Position potentiometer
- Exterior mirror fold-in control unit
- LEDs for lane change warning
- All-round vision camera in the exterior mirror
- Block diagrams

Exterior mirror adjustment switch
The electrical exterior mirrors are adjusted using the exterior mirror adjustment switch in the driver's door. With the equipment specification "Low", the mirror adjustment switch controls the electric exterior mirror motors directly. With the equipment specification "High", the operating signals are transmitted via LIN bus to the footwell module (FRM) and the electric exterior mirrors.

Outside temperature sensor
The outside temperature sensor records the ambient temperature. The outside temperature sensor sends this information directly to the instrument panel.

Instrument panel
The instrument panel processes the information from the outside temperature sensor. From an ambient temperature below 3°C, the instrument panel sends a message via K-CAN to the responsible control unit. With the equipment specification "Low", to the junction box electronics (JBE). The JBE then electrically activates the mirror heating. With the equipment specification "High" to the footwell module (FRM). The FRM reports this via LIN bus to the electrical exterior mirrors.

Footwell module (FRM)
The FRM takes on the lighting of the mirror adjustment switch. With the equipment specification "High", the FRM is connected via LIN bus to the exterior mirror adjustment switch and the electrical exterior mirrors.

Junction Box Electronics (JBE)
The JBE is responsible for the voltage supply to the electrical exterior mirrors and exterior mirror adjustment switch. With the equipment specification "Low", the JBE electrically activates the mirror heating. Depending on the outside temperature, the JBE receives a signal to warm up the mirror heating. The JBE receives the signal via the K-CAN.

Position potentiometer
The mirror glass is adjusted horizontally and vertically by separate motors. The motors have a position potentiometer. The potentiometers recognize the position of the motors and return this information.

Exterior mirror fold-in control unit
The exterior mirror consists of a mirror base and mirror body. The motor for the exterior mirror fold-in control unit is installed in the mirror base. The mirror is folded in and out by reversing the motors direction of rotation.

LEDs for lane change warning
With the equipment with lane change warning, LEDs are integrated in the exterior mirror. The LEDs for the lane change warning are only available in connection with a High equipped exterior mirror. The LEDs are controlled and monitored by the ICM control unit. The ICM control unit is the master control for the lane change warning function. The footwell module does not evaluate the information from the lane change warning. Instead, it forwards the information via CAN bus to the ICM control unit.

All-round vision camera in the exterior mirror
With the equipment including all-round vision camera, a camera is integrated in the exterior mirror. The TRSVC control unit controls and monitors the camera. The footwell module does not evaluate information from the camera.

System functions

The following system functions are described for the electrical exterior mirrors:
- Horizontal and vertical exterior mirror adjustment
- Exterior mirror fold-in control unit
- Automatic parking function
- Safety functions

Horizontal and vertical exterior mirror adjustment
Adjustment of the electrical exterior mirror is possible from Terminal R ON. The electrical exterior mirrors can be adjusted through the keypad in the mirror adjustment switch in horizontal and vertical direction. A slide switch switches between the drivers side and the passengers side. It is only possible to adjust the mirror in either the horizontal or the vertical at any one time. No adjustment is possible with the exterior mirrors folded in. The adjustment time is limited to a maximum of 10 seconds to protect the motors and the mechanisms. Once the maximum adjustment time has elapsed, it is not possible to adjust the exterior mirrors for another 10 seconds.

Exterior mirror fold-in control unit
The exterior mirrors can be folded in to the side window to reduce the vehicle width. It is possible to fold in the exterior mirrors as of terminal R ON. The exterior mirrors will be folded in by pressing the button for the exterior mirror fold-in control unit in the driver's door. Pressing the button again after the exterior mirror has folded in or out folds it back again in the opposite direction. An anti-repeat circuit is integrated to prevent excessively frequent folding in or out.

Automatic parking function
The automatic parking function is only available in conjunction with the "Drivers mirror memory" optional extra. To improve the view of the curb, the outside mirror glass in the exterior mirror on the passenger side is folded downwards when travelling in reverse. This function can only be performed under the following conditions:
- Slide switch for controlling the exterior mirrors set to the "driver's door" position.
- No trailer coupled to the vehicle.

Safety functions
To protect the motors from overload, the motors have blocking recognition. If the drive is blocked, the current in the motor rises. The applicable control unit compares the starting current in normal operation to the current when the drive is blocked. An obstruction ('blocking') is detected by any difference in the current. The motor is no longer driven.
- Repeat interlock
To provide overheating protection for the motor the mirror folding function is locked after it has been working for a total of 45 seconds. If the anti-repeat circuit is active, the electric exterior mirrors can be unfolded once more.

- Undervoltage cutout
The supply voltage for the electric exterior mirrors is monitored by the junction box electronics (JBE). All electric exterior mirror functions are locked if the voltage drops below 8.5 Volts. As of an vehicle voltage of 9 Volts, the functions are available again.
