Removing and Installing Engine
11 00 050 Removing and installing engine (N54)Special tools required:
Important!
Aluminium screws/bolts must be replaced each time they are released.
Aluminium screws/bolts are permitted with and without colour coding (blue).
For reliable identification:
Aluminium screws/bolts are not magnetic.
Jointing torque and angle of rotation must be observed without fail (risk of damage).
Necessary preliminary work:
^ Clamp off battery lead from negative terminal
^ Remove trailing links
^ Move engine compartment lid into assembly position
^ Remove sound insulation from bulkhead upper section
^ Drain off engine oil
^ Remove cover for cowl panel
^ Remove intake filter housing
^ Remove fan cowl with electric fan
^ Remove coolant radiator
^ Remove drive belt for alternator
^ Release oil lines from oil-to-water heat exchanger
^ Detach all coolant hoses from engine
^ Release suction and pressure lines from power steering pump (do not remove power steering pump)
^ Remove left charge air duct
^ Remove clean air pipe on left and right
^ Detach vacuum line from brake booster
^ Release engine wiring harness from electronics box and lay to one side (do not remove electronics box)
^ Release wiring harness for injectors from supplementary electronics box
^ Remove exhaust system
^ Release grounding cable from engine holder
^ Remove gearbox
Support engine with special tool 11 7 310 on steering box.
Detach plug from power steering pump (1).
Detach right pressure pipe (1) from charge air cooler.
Evacuate air conditioning system.
Release screws (1) of air conditioning lines and disconnect.
Do not remove air conditioning compressor.
Disconnect fuel lines (1 and 2).
Close off fuel line (1) with special tool 13 5 281.
Close off fuel line (2) with special tool 13 5 282.
Secure special tool 11 8 680 to lifting eye on gearbox side.
Press locking pin (1) in direction of arrow until locking balls (2) are loose.
Secure special tool 11 8 680 to lifting eye.
Release locking pin (1).
Installation note:
Special tool 11 8 680 is mounted correctly if the locking balls (2) are locked.
Special tool 11 8 680 is firmly secured to lifting eye.
Attach special tool 11 0 000 to special tool 11 8 680 in eye (1).
Screw in towing hook (1).
Attach special tool 11 0 000 to engine crane.
Only suspend special tool 11 0 000 to the mounting eyes (2) provided for this purpose.
Release nuts on engine mount on left and right.
Lift engine out with crane.
Installation note:
Fix special tool 11 7 310 onto steering box.
Assemble engine.
Fill and vent cooling system
Fill and vent power steering system
Check function of DME control unit.
