Clicking Noise from Rear Axle

SITUATION

A clicking noise is heard from the rear axle during a load reversal or when driving off.

CAUSE

Friction between the inner race of the rear wheel bearing and the output shaft collar of the rear axle

CORRECTION

Replace the double hexagon collar nut for the rear wheel bearing on the affected axle (one or both sides as needed) while following these specific tightening instructions:

^ Replace the collar nut (P/N 33 41 11 33 785).

^ Torque down the collar nut to 450 Nm.

^ Loosen the collar nut and turn back 360°.

^ Retighten the collar nut to 450Nm.

^ Peen the inner edge of the collar nut when finished.
