Centre Console Operating Facility

Centre Console Operating Facility

Centre console operating facility
The centre-console control panel is located to the left of the gearshift lever.
Depending on the individual equipment level, the centre-console control panel may include buttons for any of the following systems:
- Dynamic Stability Control (standard)
- Dynamic Drive with Dynamic Drive control switch (standard)
- Bumper camera
- Park distance control

Functional description
This section includes descriptions of the following components in the centre console control panel:

Drive dynamic control switch and driving experience switch
The driving dynamic control switch is used to operate Dynamic Driving Control.
The new Dynamic Driving Control has the following innovations:
1. All of the drive and driving stability control systems installed in the vehicle are activated. The central control unit for this is the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM).
2. A number of different programs are available for selection:
- COMFORT
- NORMAL
- SPORT
- SPORT+

An extra mode is available if a driving experience switch is fitted: ECO PRO.
The selected program appears in the instrument cluster's display screen (KOMBI). Individual settings can be selected at the Central Information Display (CID) using the "Options" menu.

The following systems are influenced by Dynamic Driving Control:
- Accelerator pedal module
- Automatic transmission
- Steering
- Vertical dynamics management (VDM) via shock absorbers as well as active roll stabilization
- Dynamic Stability Control

DTC button = DSC OFF
In conformity with new legal regulations the DTC button now displays the message "OFF" along with a symbol representing a skidding vehicle. The same symbol appears in the instrument cluster's indicator lamp (consult Owner's Handbook).

The DTC button can be used to select 3 switching states:
- DTC button not pressed after terminal change: DSC in operation (standard)
- Press DTC button briefly: DTC operating (TRACTION display appears in the tachometer)
- Press DTC button for longer period: DSC and ASC deactivated, ABS and ABD-X remain active on AWD vehicles (DSC OFF display in the tachometer)

NOTICE: Pressing the button for an excessively long period will result in a fault (DTC) entry.

If pressure is maintained on the Dynamic Drive or DTC button for more than 10 seconds a fault (DTC) will be registered by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM). DSC assumes operation.

Button for bumper camera
The detection range of the cameras is a maximum of 100 meters. The images transmitted by both cameras appear simultaneously in the Central Information Display (CID). The bumper-mounted cameras are activated by pressing the button. The system is automatically deactivated once vehicle speed rises beyond 15 km/h.

PDC button
The PDC button switches the park distance control on or off (see Owner's Handbook). PDC provides driver support during parking maneuvers. Slow approaches to an object in front of or behind the vehicle are indicated by:
- acoustic signal tones
- a visual display in the CID

Structure and inner electrical connection
The centre console operating facility has 2 plug connections (6-pin and 4-pin).
The location lighting (Terminal 58g) is provided by the footwell module (FRM).

Interfaces and setpoint values
Electrical connections exist between the buttons in the centre-console control panel and various control units:
- Driving dynamics control switch and DTC button to the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
- Bumper camera button and PDC button to the controller (CON)

NOTICE: Now the center console control panel is connected only to the ICM control unit.

Following the introduction of the latest, more highly-evolved iteration of Integrated Chassis Management (ICM), all of the connections from the centre-console control panel now lead directly to the ICM control unit.

Note the following specification data for the centre-console control unit:

Size Value
Switch contact cycles 50.000
Voltage supply for switch contacts 9 to 16 volts
Maximum current consumption of 1,5 mA
switch contacts
Maximum contact resistance of 150 Ohms
switch contacts
Temperature range -40 to 140 °C

Diagnosis instructions

Failure of the component
Under normal circumstances malfunctions in the centre-console control panel will be limited to failures in individual button assemblies. The ICM monitors the connected buttons for the following conditions:
- Open wire or circuit
- Short circuit to earth
- Continuous operation

The controller does not monitor the connected buttons. When continuous pressure is maintained on one of the buttons (from a purse, etc.) a fault (DTC) is recorded in the control unit for that particular function.
A function check of the buttons can be run using the BMW diagnosis system.
