Rear Compartment Controller
Rear Compartment Controller
Rear compartment controller
The rear-compartment controller is the central control for the functions of the Rear Seat Entertainment system (RSE) that can be selected and configured on the 2 rear displays (FD and FD2) . The control panel and control unit of the rear-compartment controller (FCON) have been combined to form one component.
There are 7 fixed selector buttons arranged around the rear-compartment controller. These selector buttons enable selection of numerous submenus.
Buttons for the following functions are integrated in each control panel (control panel, left, for rear-compartment controller and control panel, right, for rear-compartment controller):
- Selection of the rear display to be controlled via the rear-compartment controller
- Volume control for the rear seat entertainment system
Functional description
The Rear Seat Entertainment system can be switched on as of terminal 30B ON. When the Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on, numerous functions of the Rear Seat Entertainment system can be selected and configured in the rear displays using the rear-compartment controller.
The Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched on directly at the RSE control unit. Two buttons on the RSE control unit can be used to switch on the left-hand and right-hand side of the Rear Seat Entertainment system separately.
After switching on the Rear Seat Entertainment system, one of the selector buttons in the control panel on the left or right is to be operated to select the rear display. Only then can the previously activated and adopted rear display be operated using the rear-compartment controller.
The rear-compartment controller reads in the button signals. The rear-compartment controller transforms the signals into messages on the K-CAN. The central gateway module (ZGM) is the data interface between K-CAN and MOST. The RSE control unit is a user of the MOST bus and processes the signals. All image information is transferred across the LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signalling) data line from the RSE control unit to the rear displays.
The control button of the rear-compartment controller is always operated from the rest position and the control button always returns to this position when released.
The control button of the rear-compartment controller can be operated as follows:
- Tilting (possible in 4 direction)
- Turning (via locking positions)
- Pressing (to select a highlighted function)
The following selector buttons can be used to jump directly into the assigned menu:
- Selector key "CD/Multimedia"
- Selector key for "radio"
- Selector button "Menu" (main menu)
- Telephone "selector key"
- Navigation "selector key"
Pressing a selector button briefly takes the user directly to a certain submenu, e.g. for "Telephone" to the telephone list, for "Radio" to the list of stations or for "Navigation" to the navigation map.
Pressing a selector button twice or pressing it for longer than 2 seconds takes the user to the higher-level menu, e.g. for "Navigation" to the navigation input for new destinations. Here, the navigation map is only displayed again after selection using the control button.
The "Option" selector button enables other settings in the last selected submenu.
When pressed, the "Back" selector button returns the user to the last screen displayed.
The 7 selector buttons are distributed over 3 buttons and 2 rocker switches.

- Button for selection of "Back"
- Button for selection of "Option"
- Rocker switches
- Rocker switch for selection "CD/Multimedia" or "Radio"

All selector buttons return to the initial position after pressing.
Structure and inner electrical connection
The rear-compartment controller (FCON) is connected to the K-CAN and vehicle electrical system by means of a 10-pin plug connection.
Each control panel (control panel, left, rear-compartment controller and control panel, right, rear-compartment controller) is connected by a 10-pin plug connection to the rear-compartment controller.
The locator lighting (terminal 58g) for the rear-compartment controller is controlled by the footwell module (FRM) via K-CAN.
The rear-compartment controller is supplied with terminal 30B via the rear distribution box.
Pin assignments
The graphic above shows only the supply and bus connection. The current pin assignment is recorded on the wiring diagrams in the ISTA diagnosis system (Integrated Service Technical Application). Click on the component code in the wiring diagram to activate the "Installation location" and "Pin assignment" tabs.
Nominal values
Observe the following setpoint values for the rear-compartment controller (FCON):
Size Value
Supply voltage 9 to 16 V
Temperature range -40 to 85 °C

Failure of the component
If the communication to the rear-compartment controller (FCON) fails, run the standard tests (global testing procedure). If there is an internal control unit fault, the following behavior is to be expected:
- Fault entry in the rear-compartment controller
