65 13 00 (641) Deactivating and Reactivating Airbags / Belt Reminder

65 13 00 (641) Deactivating And Reactivating Airbags / Belt Reminder

All Series from model year 1994

Situation:
At the customer's express request and at his sole responsibility, the following airbags can be deactivated and reactivated:
- The front passenger airbag
- The front left and/or front right side airbags

NOTE: Whenever mention is made in this Service Information bulletin of side airbag, the head airbag is not included.

- The rear left and/or rear right side airbags
(E38, E39, E46, E53, E60, E61, E65, E66, E83 only)

IMPORTANT:
On F series and R60 vehicles, only by using a key switch installed as standard can the airbags be deactivated.

It is not possible to retrofit the key switch in order to deactivate the airbags.

It is not possible to deactivate the airbags by means of conversion (encoding).

IMPORTANT: It is possible that certain national regulations prohibit the deactivation of certain airbags. If in doubt, contact Technical Support before carrying out any work.

Important note when travelling with children:
Children younger than 12 years of age or smaller than 150 cm may only travel if they are secured in suitable child restraint systems. Child restraint systems may only be used on the front passenger seat when the airbags are deactivated, as otherwise there is a substantial risk of injury to the children if the airbags are inflated, even if they are seated in a child restraint system. If it is not possible to ensure that children are unable to lean out of their seat towards the door trim panel when side airbags are fitted in the rear, the side airbags should be deactivated as they could otherwise cause serious injury if they are triggered.

Furthermore, at the customer's express request and at his sole responsibility, the seat belt reminder can be deactivated and reactivated in the model series as follows.

Vehicles concerned:
E34, E36 (excluding Z3) European version from production period September 1993.

NOTE:
The procedure for deactivating or reactivating the airbag for the E34 and E36 models (excluding Z3) is described in Enclosures 5 and 6.

Refer to the respective repair instructions for series/models launched since series introduction of the E38.

IMPORTANT:
The following exceptions relating to the deactivation or reactivation of the airbag must be observed.
- R50, R52, R53 production period: from July 2004
E60, E61, E63, E64 production period: from September 2005
E81, E82, E87, E88, E90, E91, E92, E70, E71, E72 production period: from series introduction

It is not possible to deactivated the airbags by means of conversion (encoding).

A key switch is available as optional equipment for these vehicles (since March 2005 for the E87) and is also provided as a retrofit kit.

- E64 Production period for : from series introduction until August 2005)
The different seat/seat belt system (SGS) means that the legal standard ECE R21 "new" cannot be met. For technical reasons, the E64 cannot be approved in accordance with ECE R21 "old", as in the case of the E46 Convertible. For this reason, it is not permissible to deactivate the front passenger airbag by means of conversion (encoding).

- E83 Production period for : from September 2004
A modification to the front passenger airbag cover means that the front passenger airbag is no longer to be deactivated by conversion (encoding). For these vehicles, a key switch is available optionally and as a retrofit kit.

- R50 / R53, R52 vehicles with "John Cooper Works sports seats":
The decisive document for installation is the installation instructions for "Retrofitting John Cooper Works sports seats"
The vehicle's operating licence is not invalidated if John Cooper Works sports seats" are retrofitted. The "John Cooper Works sports seat" is an element of the European operating licence for the MINI (R50 / R53). Approval from a technical inspection organisation and an entry in the vehicle documents is not required.
The following documentation in the Service Information bulletin enclosure is therefore not required when fitting "John Cooper Works sports seats"
- Procedure for deactivating and reactivating airbags in the dealer organisation; "Documentation of the conversion" section/Enclosure 1
- Documenting the customer's consent and the work carried out / Enclosure 3

Procedure: Deactivating / reactivating airbags

IMPORTANT:
For vehicles with belt force limiter without key switch, the seat belt must be exchanged for a "seat belt without belt force limiter" when the front-passenger airbag is deactivated.

It is not necessary to replace the seat belt in the E46/C.

If the front passenger airbag is reactivated, the seat belt must again be replaced with a "seat belt with belt force limiter" when the front-passenger airbag is reactivated.

In Australia and Korea it is not permitted to deactivate the front-passenger airbag.

For vehicles for which a key switch is available for deactivating / reactivating the airbags is optionally available, retrofit kits are also available for retrofitting a key switch.

Tables 1 and 2 provide an overview of the measures needed for deactivating / reactivating the airbags, taking the stipulations for the specific models into account.

Deactivating / reactivating seat belt reminder
Deactivate and reactivate the seat belt reminder for the driver and front passenger by encoding as per the table below.

NOTE:
Deactivating the seat belt reminder is not permitted in Japan.
On the E53, it is only possible to deactivate / reactivate the seat belt reminder on the front passenger side if a Light Check Module (LCM) / Light Module (LM) with a coding index of 24 or higher is fitted (series from April 2005).
