Controller
The controller is the central operating element for the vehicle functions that can be selected and configured on the central information display.
The control panel and control unit of the controller (CON) have been combined in one single component.
Depending on the series, model year and vehicle equipment, the controller is available in the following versions:
- Basic version (optional equipment SA663 "Radio BMW Professional"):
There are 5 fixed selector keys arranged around the controller. The basic version of the controller is used in vehicles without navigation system.
- High version (optional equipment SA606 "Business navigation system" or optional equipment SA609 "Professional navigation system"):
There are 7 fixed selector keys arranged around the controller.
These selector buttons enable selection of numerous submenus.
Functional description
The controller in the central information display (CID) can be used to select a function under the following operating conditions: from terminal 30B ON and/or terminal 30F ON (depending on the series and model year) and audio control panel switched on or generally from terminal 15 ON.
The controller reads in the button signals. The controller converts the signals to messages on the K-CAN and/or KCAN2 (depending on the series and model year). The messages are processed by the headunit. The central information display (CID) receives the signals for display on the LVDS data line (Low Voltage Differential Signalling) from the headunit.
The control button of the controller is always operated from the rest position and the control button always returns to this position when released.
In the basic version, the control button of the controller can be operated as follows:
- Tilting (2 directions)
- Turning (via locking positions)
- Pressing (to select a highlighted function)
The following selector buttons can be used to jump directly into the assigned menu:
- Selector key "AUDIO" (Entertainment)
- Selector key "MENU" (Start menu)
- Selector key "TEL" (telephone)
Pressing a selector button twice or pressing it for longer than 2 seconds takes the user to the higher-level menu, e.g. for telephone to the phone book selection.
The "OPTION" selector button enables other settings in the last selected submenu.
When pressed, the "BACK" selector button returns the user to the last screen displayed.
The graphic below shows the controller for the example of the basic version (optional equipment SA663 "Radio BMW Professional").
In the high version, the control button of the controller can be operated as follows:
- Tilting (4 directions)
- Turning (via locking positions)
- Pressing (to select a highlighted function)
The following selector keys can be used to jump directly to the assigned menu (the labelling depends on the series, model year, vehicle equipment and national-market version):
- Selector key "CD" and/or "MEDIA" (Entertainment)
- Selector key for "RADIO"
- Selector key "MENU" (Start menu)
- Selector key "TEL" (telephone)
- Selector key "NAV" and/or "MAP" (Navigation)
A quick push of a selector key will take the user directly to a specific submenu: E.g. with radio to the list of stations or with navigation to the navigation map.
Pressing a selector button twice or pressing it for longer than 2 seconds takes the user to the higher-level menu, e.g. for "Navigation" to the navigation input for new destinations. Here, the navigation map is only displayed again after selection using the control button.
The "OPTION" selector button enables other settings in the last selected submenu.
When pressed, the "BACK" selector button returns the user to the last screen displayed.
The 7 selector buttons are distributed over 3 buttons and 2 rocker switches.
- Button
- Button for selection of "MENU" (main menu)
- Button for selection of "BACK"
- Button for selection of "OPTION"
- Rocker switches
- Rocker switch for selection "CD/Multimedia" and/or "MEDIA" or "RADIO"
- Rocker switch for selection of "TELEPHONE" or "NAV" and/or "MAP"
All selector buttons return to the initial position after pressing.
The graphic below shows the high version (optional equipment SA606 "Business navigation system" or optional equipment SA609 "Professional navigation system"). The labelling depends on the series, model year, vehicle equipment and national-market version.
Structure and inner electrical connection
Depending on the series and model year, the controller (CON) is connected with a ten-pin and/or four-pin plug connection to the vehicle electrical system and K-CAN and/or K-CAN2.
The locator lighting (terminal 58g) for the controller is controlled by the footwell module (FRM) via K-CAN and/or K-CAN2 (depending on the series and model year).
The graphic below shows the power supply for the example of terminal 30B, basic version (optional equipment SA663 "Radio BMW Professional").
The graphic below shows the power supply on the example of terminal 30F, high version (optional equipmentSA606 "Business navigation system" or optional equipment SA609 "Professional navigation system"). Depending on the series and model year, the front power distribution box supplies the controller (CON) with terminal 30F or terminal 30B.
Pin assignments
The graphics above show only the supply and bus connection. The current pin assignment is recorded on the wiring diagrams in the ISTA diagnosis system (Integrated Service Technical Application). Click on the component code in the wiring diagram to activate the "Installation location" and "Pin assignment" tabs.
Nominal values
Observe the following setpoint values for the controller:
Size Value
Supply voltage 9 to 16 V
Temperature range -40 to 85 °C

Failure of the component
If the communication to the controller (CON) fails, run the standard tests (global testing procedure). If there is an internal control unit fault, the following behavior is to be expected:
- Fault entry in the controller
