SUBJECT
N52T Engine: Intermittent Noise from Engine

MODEL
F10 (5 Series) 528i with N52T engine from start of production to September 31st, 2011

F25 (X3) xDrive28i with N52T engine from start of production to March 1st, 2012

SITUATION

The customer complains that a slight rattling noise can be heard from the upper portion of the engine while idling. The rattling noise occurs after a cold start-up and may continue for a few minutes while the engine temperature increases. As the engine temperature increases, the rattling noise will diminish.

CAUSE

A DME software error is affecting the cold start operation of the engine oil pump volume control solenoid.

PROCEDURE

Compare the vehicle's current I-Level data status to the chart below. If the vehicle has a lower I-Level data status, program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.43.0. or later.

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to Centernet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.
