51 31 ... Replacing capacitor at rear window

Special tools required:

Necessary preliminary tasks:
Remove trim for rear lid

IMPORTANT:
Risk of damage.
Work on rear window is only permitted using special tool 00 9 322.

Remove window spacer (1) with special tool 00 9 322.

Mark position of capacitor film (1) with adhesive tape.
Pull off capacitor film at an angle of 45°.

Installation note:
Clean bonding surface (1) for capacitor film with R2 cleaning agent (Sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department).
Area must be dust- and grease-free.

Check rear window for damage to conductor paths.
If conductor paths are damaged, the rear window must be replaced.

Installation note:
When installing the capacitor film the rear window should at least be at room temperature and ideally heated to a temperature of 30 °C to 60 °C for better adhesion of the bonding surface. Rear window may only be heated on the outer side.

Position the capacitor film on the rear window first before adhering it to the rear window.
Only when the capacitor film is positioned exactly, can the first layer of the adhesive tape be pulled off and bonded, then the second layer pulled off and bonded, in order to avoid the capacitor film slipping.
Do not hold in the cleaned adhesive joint at the rear window or bonding surface of the capacitor.

IMPORTANT: It is imperative to observe the exact positioning of the capacitor film in order to be able to guarantee fault free radio mode.

Observe distance to the electrical contact of A = 1 mm.

IMPORTANT:
Capacitor film must not have any kinks before installation.
Stretch out capacitor film straight when adhering using special tool 00 9 322. There must be no creases or bubbles in the capacitor film.

After modifying the capacitor film check functioning of the heated rear window and radio.
