51 31 000 Removing And Installing/Renewing Windscreen

Special tools required:

IMPORTANT:
"Instructions on window bonding" serve as the basis for this repair instruction and must be observed without fail.
Cover front side walls with protective covers.

NOTE: Removal is performed with Roll Out 2000. Only use an oscillating blade when replacing the windscreen.

Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove interior rear-view mirror
- Only with camera-based driver support systems:
- Remove camera for lane departure warning

- Remove panels for roof pillar at front
- Remove cover for cowl panel
- Remove gutter strips
- Remove rubber frame for windscreen

Replacement:
- If necessary, replace rain/light sensor
- If necessary, remove fogging/condensation sensor
- If necessary, on vehicles with rain/light solar sensor and without HUD replace optical element for rain/light solar sensor
- If necessary, replace solar rain/light sensor
- Tape off body aperture all round with fabric adhesive tape

Disconnect plug connections (1) on rain/light/solar sensor or rain/light/solar and condensation sensor.

Replacement only:
Attach a 24 mm U-shape blade (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department) to tool.
Regrind blade with a grinding stone while machine is running (new blades also).
Carefully insert blade between body aperture and windscreen.
Guide handle of knife parallel to windscreen.
Cut through adhesive bead as closely as possible to windscreen.

NOTE: When cutting is carried out at the bottom in the event of replacement, the engine bonnet/hood must be in the service position.

Move engine compartment lid into service position.
Cut through windscreen adhesive bead at bottom.
Lift out windscreen with special tools 51 3 010.
Pull off adhesive tapes all round.

Installation note:
Renew faulty windscreen rubber surround (top).
If necessary, replace defective expanding foam tape (1).

IMPORTANT: Press down and apply expanding foam tape (1) shortly before installing windscreen with special tool 51 0 300. Relaxed expanding foam tape could crush cement bead (leaks, wind noises).

Replacement:
Attach new expanding foam tape (1) to lower edge of defroster channel (2).
Expanding foam tape (1) may only be stuck up to corner points of defroster channel (2).
Stick on expanding foam tape (3) (120 mm long) above vehicle identification number.

Fitting spacers:

Remove all spacers and remove remnants completely.
Pay attention precisely to installation position of spacers (1) and semicircular spacer buffers (2).
Dimensions (A to C) measured from roof edge.
Dimensions (D and E) measured from middle of vehicle (3).
A 150 mm D 680 mm
B 500 mm E 390 mm
C 700 mm

Installation note:

Only for windscreen replacement with Head Up Display version:
Prior to bonding windscreen, perform a function check of HUD.
To do so, fit windscreen with mounted windscreen rubber surround (top) but without primer or adhesive onto spacers in window frame and fix with adhesive tape.
If necessary, press down expanding foam tape first with special tool 51 0 300.

Overview for windscreen cementing (E70):

Attach special tool 51 3 010 twice to tool trolley. Moisten suction surfaces and tension windscreen from outside.
If reusing removed windscreen, remove residual adhesive down to 0.5 mm.
If necessary, install rubber frame (6), paying attention to centre markings in so doing.
If necessary, press expanding foam tape down with hand roller.
Virtually vertical part (B) of adhesive bead (1) must be positioned to rubber frame (5) and windscreen outer edge (5).
Spread bead joint with special tool.00 9 322

NOTE:
Adhesive area for plastic adhesive tapes (1) must be free from grease and dust.
Stick two yellow plastic adhesive tapes (1) to roof at distance (A) from outside corners.
Length: 400 mm
A = 250 mm

Working on windscreen (1) carefully with special tool 51 3 010:
- Position at top
- Align sides evenly
- Insert at bottom and press down
- align seal at top according to dimension (A) A = 4 ±1 mm
- secure in terms of height in this position at top with two yellow plastic adhesive tapes (2)

Preload on top of windscreen to prevent wind noise:
Windscreen (1) must be lower than roof outer skin (2). This is the only way to prevent wind noises.
Position special tool 51 0 010 in middle of vehicle depending on dimension (A) and check underprotrusion of windscreen (1).
Windscreen underprotrusion (A):
A = 5±0.5 mm
X = Measurement stages 1... 4 mm

Installation note:
Version with HUD only:
Check HUD functions again and if necessary adjust.

Installation note:
Only with camera-based driver support systems:
Carry out camera calibration via diagnosis system.
Under Service Functions menu:

- Body
- Lane departure warning
- Calibrate camera
