Timing Cover: Service and Repair

11 14 110 Removing and installing, sealing or replacing front gear case cover (M57T2- SCR)

Special tools required:





Necessary preliminary work:
^ Remove engine
^ Remove cylinder head.
^ Remove oil sump
^ Remove vibration damper
^ Replace crankshaft radial shaft seal

Important!





Protect alternator against engine oil.
Cover alternator with suitable auxiliary materials.
(Risk of damage).
Assemble charge air hoses without grease and dry.





Release screws.

Remove gear case cover.





Lock chain tensioner (1) at bottom with special tool 11 3 340and remove.

Slacken nut (2).

Tightening torque: 13 52 2AZ.

Detach tensioning rail (3).

Detach guide rail (4).

Remove sprockets and chain.

Installation Note:
Check fitting sleeves (see arrows) for damage.





Replace gasket.

Installation Note:
When repair work is carried out on the gear case cover, the gear case cover gasket must be cut through at the marked points (1).

Apply a thin coat of Drei Bond 1209 sealant (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department) to ends (arrows) of gear case cover on both sides.

If necessary, remove coolant pump.





Fit gear case cover.

Insert all screws and pre-tighten to 5 Nm.

Note:
M7 screws.

Installation Note:
Tightening torque 11 14 1AZ.





Assemble engine.
