DVD Changer

DVD Changer

DVD changer
The single-slot changer with integral control unit is offered as a DVD changer. The DVD changer has a capacity of up to 6 CDs/DVDs. CD stands for "Compact Disc" and DVD is the acronym for "Digital Versatile Disc".

Functional description
Single slot changer means that the CDs/DVDs are fed into the device individually without a CD magazine. A CD/DVD can be fed in as follows:

Press the LOAD button
If no other buttons are pressed following brief activation of the LOAD button the LED in the DVD selection button for the first empty compartment starts to flash. The compartment moves into position during this time. After it is in position, the two LEDs on the insertion slot begin flashing and the CD/DVD can be inserted.
The content of the CD/DVD is read out immediately after insertion. Only after the content has been read out can the next CD/DVD be inserted by pressing the LOAD button again, followed by the CD/DVD selection button.
To be able to insert all CDs/DVDs quickly in succession, the rapid load mode must be activated. To do this, the load button is pressed for approx. 3 seconds. The LEDs of the CD/DVD selection buttons that are associated with the empty compartments begin to flash. Depending on the number of empty compartments, up to 6 CDs/DVDs can be inserted consecutively. The content of the inserted CDs/DVDs is read out either when the last empty compartment is loaded, after a timeout or when the LOAD button is pressed.
A specific individual CD/DVD is ejected by pressing the eject button, followed by the corresponding CD/DVD selection button.
All inserted CDs/DVDs can be ejected consecutively by pressing and holding down the eject button.
To be able to feed in CDs/DVDs, the shutter must be in the open position. If insertion is possible the two LEDs on the insertion slot will flash. The LED in the selection button for the selected slot will also start to flash.
The controller is the central operating element for all functions that can be operated on the central information display (CID). After the corresponding menu is selected, the various functions of the DVD changer can be controlled on the controller.
How to operate the controller is described in detail in the Owner's Handbook for the vehicle.

DVD area code
Every DVD changer has a certain regional DVD area code.
The DVD area codes were introduced to restrict the playback of DVDs to certain markets. Generally, DVDs appear earlier in one region than another. For this purpose, the globe was subdivided into a number of regions and every region was assigned its own area code.
For the area code to work, each DVD changer is equipped with its own area code that specifies the market for which the device is intended. Thus, for example, European devices are preset with area code 2 and American devices have area code 1.
Every DVD has one or more area codes, depending on the region or regions for which it is intended. Area code 0 is used on DVDs that are released for all regions. It is also possible to restrict the release to certain regions, e.g. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, meaning all countries except for the USA. When a DVD is inserted, the DVD changer (DVDC) checks whether the region stored in the control unit matches the country code of the DVD. The changer can only play back DVDs with the area code that is stored in the control unit. The region code is changed by recoding the control unit (DVDC).
The control unit's region code can be changed a maximum of five times. Once the point is reached where no additional changes are possible, the control unit must be replaced to allow playing of a DVD with a different region code.
The DVD changer supports different data formats.
The video data are decoded in the DVD changer, converted to an analogue signal and transmitted via the CVBS line.
The audio data are decoded in the DVD changer and then placed on the MOST. CDs/DVDs with data protected by Digital Rights Management (or DRM) cannot be played.
When playing back a DVD via the internal drive of the Car Information Computer (CIC), the image cannot be transmitted to the RSE control unit (RSE stands for "rear seat entertainment system"). Likewise, when a DVD is played back in the DVD drive of the rear seat entertainment system (= RSE), the image cannot be transmitted to the Car Information Computer.
When a DVD is played back via the DVD changer (DVDC), the image can be transmitted to the Car Information Computer (CIC) and to the rear seat entertainment system (RSE). There are no restrictions in audio mode.

Structure and inner electrical connection
The DVD changer (DVDC) is connected to the vehicle electrical system and the MOST network via a 12-pin plug connection with a MOST interface.
The DVD changer transmits the picture signals via CVBS lines to the connected devices (e.g. video switch).
The footwell module (FRM) supplies the DVD changer via terminal 58g.
The power distribution box in the junction box supplies the DVD changer via terminal 30B.

Pin assignments
The graphics above show only the supply and bus connection. The current pin assignment is recorded on the wiring diagrams in the ISTA diagnosis system (Integrated Service Technical Application). Click on the component code in the wiring diagram to activate the "Installation location" and "Pin assignment" tabs.

Setpoint values

Observe the following nominal values for the DVD changer (DVDC):

Size Value
Supply voltage 9 to 16 V
Temperature range -20 to 70 °C

Diagnosis instructions

Failure of the component
If the communication to the DVD changer (DVDC) fails, run the standard checks (global testing procedure).

Function check of the component
The diagnosis system can be used to check operation of the DVD changer.
