Reversing Camera

Reversing Camera

Reversing camera (all-round vision camera)
TRSVC stands for: Top rear bumper camera.
When manoeuvring with the vehicle, the reversing camera provides the possibility of showing the view to the rear on the display. Several assistance graphics can be faded-in to the video image depending upon the current settings. Additionally, an automatic speed-dependent camera pan can be activated. Depending on the setting in the control centre menu, the camera image is shown as full screen or in the main window (2/3 screen mask).

NOTICE: Ensure that mandatory connections for optional equipment are in place.

Alongside the already familiar PDC parking and manoeuvring aids and reversing camera, another parking and manoeuvring aid is offered in the form of the bumper camera as well as the exterior mirror camera (= all-round vision camera).
The reversing camera does not replace direct assessment of the traffic situation by the driver.

Brief component description
The following components for the reversing camera are described:

Tailgate activation with reversing camera
The reversing camera is installed behind the BMW badge. On the BMW 6-Series the BMW badge is used to operate the boot lid lock.
The BMW badge lifts automatically when the reversing camera is switched on. This automatic lifting procedure is executed by a drive unit (motor and gearset).
The drive unit activates the junction box electronics (JBE).

The drive unit is activated by the junction box electronics (JBE) over the Local Interconnect Network. The junction box electronics simultaneously supplies the drive unit with terminal 30B and ground.

Reversing camera
In the same way as the two bumper cameras, the rear view camera makes its signals available to the TRSVC control unit via an LVDS data line. The signals are forwarded to the video switch (VSW - installed depending on the variant) and subsequently to the Car Information Computer (CIC) over CVBS lines. The CIC transmits the image data via an LVDS data line to the central information display (CID). The image data are displayed on the CID.

The reversing camera is installed behind the BMW badge (tailgate activation). The reversing camera is connected to the all-round vision camera control unit by the following lines:
- local interconnect network bus
- LVDS data line

Centre console operating facility
The reversing camera is activated by a button in the centre console operating facility. Switch-on conditions and switch-off conditions see Owner's Handbook.
The reversing camera can also be switched on by using the control centre.

The centre console operating facility has 2 plug connections (6-pin and 4-pin). The buttons on the centre console operating facility are still only connected to the Integrated Chassis Management.

TRSVC: Control unit for all-round vision camera
The all-round vision camera control unit is located in the rear left of the luggage compartment. The light points, light colors and light intensities picked up by the reversing camera are evaluated by the all-round vision camera control unit. The reversing camera is connected to the all-round vision camera control unit by a 5-pin line. The all-round vision camera control unit is connected to the body CAN. The TRSVC control unit is supplied by the rear power distribution box via terminal 15N.

System functions
The following system functions are described for the reversing camera:
- Functional networking
- Personalization
- Assistance graphics

Functional networking
A complex system network with distributed functions in other control units is necessary for implementation of the all-round vision camera. The following graphic shows the system network.

Personalization
The following settings can be personalized:
- Full screen display format ON or OFF
- Maximum curve radii for the turning circle ON or OFF
- Lane track ON or OFF
- Distance graphic ON or OFF
- Camera pan ON or OFF

Assistance graphics
Various assistance graphics in the form of overlays (graphics and text) can be overlaid in the image of the camera. The assistance graphics can be enabled or disabled in the menu of the rear view camera.
- Maximum curve radii for the turning circle:
These radii map the maximum turning circle in the camera image.

- Marker lines for the lane:
The lane is dependent of the steering wheel angle. The marker lines show the projected lane of the vehicle and therefore the room required for manoeuvring.

- Distance graphic:
When the parking aid (PDC: Park Distance Control) identifies an obstacle a distance graphic is faded into the real image. The graphic changes color according to the distance to the obstacle. The color gradient goes from red to green.

- Virtual camera pan:
The vertical angle of view of the camera can be changed with the aid of the camera pan. The camera image pans virtually without mechanical movement of the camera. Different angles of view are displayed in the vertical direction and shown as full screen dependent on the driving speed. The bottom angle of view (from the bumper up to the horizontal line) is displayed for slow reversing (below 5 km/h) to allow identification of all possible details behind the vehicle. The angle of view changes upwards for faster reversing (above 5 km/h) (this means: above 1 metre of bumper ground clearance up to at least 10° above the horizontal line).

- Trailer tow hitch zoom:
The trailer tow hitch zoom is a zoomed display of the rear end. User-friendly hitching is made possible with the aid of faded in distance graphics (interactive assistance lines dependent on the steering angle as well as marker lines for the distance).

Notes for Service department

General notes
The reversing camera switches off image output when it is not active.

Diagnosis instructions

NOTICE: Follow the instructions for service functions.

The diagnosis system provides the following service function for the all-round vision camera (TRSVC):
- Calibrating and "teaching" system for all-round vision camera

Path: Service functions > Driver assistance > All-round vision camera
Depending on the vehicle equipment, all installed cameras are automatically learned in with this service function and the cameras can then be calibrated individually. The bumper camera cannot be calibrated.

NOTICE: New update procedure.

Automatic calibration is now available as a new update procedure to the reversing camera and the exterior mirror camera. Following replacement each camera must be reinitialized ("learning" function). The service function provides an automatic calibration. Manual calibration using the special tool is no longer required. On vehicles with an all-round vision camera manufactured prior to 03/2011 automatic calibration can also be activated in a programming session.

Switch-on conditions and switch-off conditions
The reversing camera is switched on in the following conditions:
- PDC button pressed (from terminal 15 ON)
- Reverse gear engaged (reversing camera switched on automatically)

The reversing camera is switched off in the following conditions:
- PDC button pressed
- After driving approx. 10 meters (forward)
- After exceeding a driving speed of approx. 15 km/h
- Over control centre (can also be permanently deactivated)
