Controller

Controller
The Controller is the central control element for all vehicle functions that can be selected and configured on the Central Information Display (CID).
The control panel and control unit of the controller (CON) have been combined in one single component.
There are 7 fixed selector keys arranged around the controller. These selector keys now enable selection of half of all the submenus.

Functional description
As of terminal 30B ON and audio control panel switched on or in general as of terminal 15 ON, the controller can be used to select a function in the Central Information Display.
The controller reads in the button signals. The controller transforms the signals into messages on the K-CAN. The message are processed by the Car Information Computer (CIC). The Central Information Display receives the signals for display from the Car Information Computer on the LVDS data line (Low Voltage Differential Signalling). The control button of the controller is always operated from the rest position and the control button always returns to this position when released.

The control button of the controller can be operated as follows:
- Tilting (4 directions)
- Turning (via locking positions)
- Pressing (to select a highlighted function)

The following selector buttons can be used to jump directly into the assigned menu:
- Selector key "CD/Multimedia"
- Selector key for "radio"
- Selector button "Menu" (main menu)
- "Telephone" selector key
- "Navigation" selector key

A quick push of a selector key will take the user directly to a specific submenu: E.g., with telephone to the telephone list, with radio to the station list or with navigation to the navigation map.
Pressing a selector button twice or pressing it for longer than 2 seconds takes the user to the higher-level menu, e.g. for "Navigation" to the navigation input for new destinations. Here, the navigation map is only displayed again after selection using the control button.
The "Option" selector button enables other settings in the last selected submenu.
When pressed, the "Back" selector button returns the user to the last screen displayed.

The 7 selector buttons are distributed over 3 buttons and 2 rocker switches (high equipment).
- Button
- Button for selection of "Menu" (main menu)
- Button for selection of "Back"
- Button for selection of "Option"
- Rocker switches
- Rocker switch for selection "CD/Multimedia" or "Radio"
- Rocker switch for selection "Telephone" or "Navigation"

All selector buttons return to the initial position after pressing.

Structure and inner electrical connection
The controller (CON) is connected to the K-CAN and vehicle electrical system by means of a 10-pin plug connection.
The locator lighting (terminal 58g) for the controller is controlled by the footwell module (FRM) via K-CAN.
The controller is supplied via the power distribution box at the front with terminal 30F (X3, 5-Series, 6-Series and 7-Series) or with the terminal 30B (1-Series and 3-Series).

Pin assignments
The graphic above shows only the supply and bus connection. The current pin assignment is recorded on the wiring diagrams in the ISTA diagnosis system (Integrated Service Technical Application). Click on the component code in the wiring diagram to activate the "Installation location" and "Pin assignment" tabs.

Nominal values
Observe the following setpoint values for the controller:

Size Value
Supply voltage 9 to 16 V
Temperature range -40 to 85 °C

Diagnosis instructions

Failure of the component
If the communication to the controller (CON) fails, run the standard tests (global testing procedure). If there is an internal control unit fault, the following behavior is to be expected:
- Fault entry in the controller
