12 36 014 Removing And Refitting/Replacing Electric Motor ECU

WARNING: High-voltage system - danger to life.

WARNING:
The following points must be strictly observed prior to starting work:
- De-energize the high-voltage system
- Observe safety information for working with hybrid cars.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Clamp off negative battery cable

NOTE: Before disconnecting the battery cable, it must be ensured that the vehicle goes to sleep. Observe a waiting period of at least 2 minutes.

- Lower front axle support

Release screws (1).
Tightening torque 12 36 1AZ.
Remove sealing cap (2).

Open flap of high-voltage interlock loop (1).

Installation note:
Check gasket (2) for damage. If damaged, seal must be replaced.
Clean sealing surfaces.

Release screw (1).
Tightening torque 12 36 2AZ.
Remove lid of high-voltage interlock loop (2) by sliding it forwards.

Release screws (1).
Tightening torque 12 36 3AZ.

IMPORTANT:
No loose parts such as screws must be left inside service flap after reassembly.
Make sure screw connections are correctly seated.

On isolated EME only:
Undo screw (1) from earth lead (2).
Tightening torque 12 36 4AZ.

IMPORTANT:
Ensure clean contact between earthing cable (1) and crankcase.
Clean contact surface on crankcase before screwing down earthing cable (1).

Release screws (1).
Remove heat shield (2).

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.

IMPORTANT: Observe notes on electrical connectors on hybrid vehicles.

Unfasten plug connection (1) and disconnect.
Push sliding piece (2) in direction of arrow as far as stop.
Remove connector (3) by pulling it forwards.

IMPORTANT: Observe notes on electrical connectors on hybrid vehicles.

Remove screw (1) from bracket (2) for gearbox oil cooler pipes.
Tightening torque 12 36 5AZ.

Slacken hose clamp (1).

IMPORTANT: Have a container ready to catch the coolant.

Pull off the coolant flow hose (2).

Coolant emerges when coolant lines are detached.
Catch and dispose of escaping coolant.
Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.

Unfasten quick-release coupling (1) and remove coolant return hose from electric motor ECU (2) by pulling it upwards.

Pull off protective cap (1) and unscrew the nut underneath from the battery positive lead (2).
Tightening torque 12 36 6AZ.

IMPORTANT: Make sure battery positive lead (2) is properly screwed on.

Push sliding piece (1) in direction of arrow as far as stop.
Remove connector (2) by pulling it forwards.

IMPORTANT: Observe notes on electrical connectors on hybrid vehicles.

Unfasten connector (1) from rotor position sensor and disconnect.
Unclip wiring harness from fixing points (2).

Release screws (1).

IMPORTANT: Observe screwing sequence.

Unfasten vent pipe (2) and disconnect.

Release screw (1). Screw (1) must be replaced with decoupled EME.
Release screw (2).

IMPORTANT: Observe screwing sequence.

Installation note:
Observe bolt tightening sequence for fitting electric motor ECU on sump:
Preassembly
1. Tighten bolt B hand-tight
2. Tighten bolt C hand-tight
3. Tighten bolt D hand-tight

Final assembly
1. Fully tighten bolt A. Tightening torque 12 36 7AZ.

On isolated EME:
Tighten new bolt A. Tightening torque 12 36 8AZ.

2. Fully tighten bolt B. Tightening torque 12 36 7AZ.
3. Fully tighten bolt C. Tightening torque 12 36 7AZ.
4. Fully tighten bolt D. Tightening torque 12 36 7AZ.

IMPORTANT:
Carry out this operation with the assistance of two other persons.
Take care not to damage busbars (1) when removing and refitting.
1. Push electrical machine electronics carefully in direction of arrow (2) as far as the stop.
2. Carefully manoeuvre out electrical machine electronics forwards at the bottom (3).

Replace dust boot (1) of electric motor ECU (2).

IMPORTANT: Sealing face of electric motor ECU (2) must not be damaged (scratched).

After installation:
Fill and bleed cooling system.

Replacement:
Carry out vehicle programming/coding.

Connect BMW diagnosis system:
1. Service functions
2. Powertrain
3. Hybrid car
4. Electrical machine electronics
5. Rotor position sensor adjustment

Replacement (only on vehicles built before 09/2010):
If a non-isolated EME was previously fitted, i.e. existing threaded hole in the sump M8 at bolting point A, the thread adaptor (1) and new micro-encapsulated M6 screw (2) must be fitted.

Coat thread adaptor (2) with Loctite 270.
Screw thread adapter (2) and standard M6 bolt (1) flush into threaded hole in sump at bolting point A.

IMPORTANT:
Do not use the supplied microencapsulated mounting screw for fitting the thread adaptor (2).
Length of M6 mounting bolt for thread adapter (1) must not exceed length of thread adapter (2).

Connect earthing cable (1) at bolting point (2) of electrical machine electronics (3).
Tightening torque 12 36 10AZ.
