Brakes - Incorrect Remaining Service Life From CBS Data
SI B34 03 13Brakes
March 2013
Technical Service
SUBJECT
Incorrect Remaining Service Life from CBS Data for Brake pads
MODEL
F30
Produced from 7/2011 through 6/2012
SITUATION
The calculated remaining service life for the brake pads (front and/or rear axle) from the CBS data does not match the actual brake pad thickness. The customer notices implausible remaining distances (too high or too low) on the front and/or the rear axle brake system.
CAUSE
Software calculation in the brake pad wear model
CORRECTION
Run vehicle diagnostics with ISTA/D 2.34.0 or a more recent version and work through the corresponding test modules.
Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.
Provided there are no faults found (must be resolved first), update the software using ISTA/P 2.47.0 or a more recent version.
Check the remaining brake pad thickness using special tool 34 1 260.
Note:
If the brake pad thickness is less than 4.0 mm (and only if it is), the brakes on the axle concerned (front or rear) must be renewed before working through the measure.
The test modules can be found under the following paths:
Activities / Service function / 05 Maintenance and Pre-Delivery Check / Reset CBS Condition Based Service / Reset CBS Condition Based Service / Start Search / ABL AS6100_CBS_RESET-CBS reset UDS.
IMPORTANT
When inputting the measured brake pad thickness, the measured value must be increased by 1mm.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.
Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation.
If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, including the Standard Scope labor operation (00 00 105 with replacing brake pads or other maintenance work - see below), use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.
Even though work time labor operation code 61 00 006 ends in "006," it is not considered a Main labor operation.
If a control module fails to program correctly or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations under the defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.
Other Repairs
If performing other ISTA diagnostics and related test plans results with eligible and covered work, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
Note:
Please follow any TeileClearing (TC) or Diagcode (DC) requirements that may apply to this additional work.
Brake Pad Replacement (less than 4.0 mm of brake pad material remaining)
Covered under the terms of the BMW Maintenance Program only.
When pad (front and/or rear) replacement is required, claim the brake pad replacement portion under the BMW Maintenance Program (defect codes and labor operations including the Standard Scope and performing a CBS reset).
