Collision Avoidance - PDC System Falsely Detects Obstacles

SI B66 04 12
Distance Systems, Cruise Control, Remote System

August 2012
Technical Service

SUBJECT
PDC: Erroneous Detection of Obstacles by All Sensors

MODEL
F30

Vehicles affected:

^ With option 508 or 507 PDC (Park Distance Control)

^ Vehicles produced to November 1, 2012

SITUATION
The PDC system falsely detects obstacles on all front and rear sensors when no obstacles are present around the vehicle.

CAUSE
Software error in the REM (Rear Electronic Module)

PROCEDURE

NOTE:
Do not replace the REM.

1. Perform diagnostics using ISTA

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.

2. If there are faults stored in the PDC system, perform all related test plans. Do not perform steps 3-5.

3. If no faults are stored in the PDC system, perform a battery reset for 30 minutes. Retest the system.

4. If the issue is no longer present, no further diagnosis test steps are required and the vehicle can be released.

5. If the issue is still present after performing step 3 above, check the following:

^ Inspect all 8 sensors (both front and back) for any defects such as scratches or glue over the front of the sensor.

^ Verify that all sensors are properly installed in their brackets and are aligned correctly. Refer to the PDC functional description (FUB) FB-660003-K11 in ISTA.

^ Check the wiring harness for any shorts or damage such as chafing or pinched wires.

^ Search for PDC test plans as follows: Activities/Information Search/Function structure/Park Assist system/Start search.

^ Perform test plan AT6621_01WAS - PDC fault pattern; AT6621_01AKUWAR - Parking aid: Acoustic warning; AT6621_07USS - Parking aid: Ultrasonic sensors.

^ If the issue is still present, obtain one new sensor, swapping it out one sensor, and retest. If issue remains, reinstall the original sensor and repeat this swap with the remaining sensors.

^ If a defective sensor is found from the previous step, the part should be replaced.

^ Retest the system.

NOTE:
A software solution is expected with the release of ISTA/P 2.48 in November 2012. This SI will be updated once the software becomes available.
