SUBJECT
Check Control Message "Adaptive Headlights Failed"

MODEL
F30

Vehicles produced from October 31, 2011 to August 30, 2012 with option code 524 AHL (Adaptive Headlights)

SITUATION
The Check Control message "Adaptive Headlights Failed" is displayed in the Central Information Display (CID). All headlights are functioning properly.

One or more of the following fault codes are stored in the FEM (Front Electronic Module):

^ 0x8041BA - Adaptive headlight (AHL): system defective

^ 0x8041F8 - Right headlight driver module (HDM): AHL error

^ 0x8041FB - Left headlight driver module (HDM): AHL error

CAUSE
Software error in the (HDM) Headlight Driver Module

PROCEDURE
Do not replace parts.

1. Perform a vehicle test using ISTA and diagnose the faults listed above related to the FEM. If the test plan does not lead to the cause of the problem (no problem found), proceed to the next step.

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section

2. Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.48.1 or later.

New integration level: F020-12-11-502 or higher

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
