SUBJECT
Various Electrical Malfunctions Related to the FEM

MODEL
F30 (3 Series)

Vehicles produced from June 30, 2011 [NEW] to August 21, 2012

SITUATION
One or more of the following situations may occur when using the windshield wipers:

^ After the wipers are switched off, they do not remain in the park position, but in the middle of the windshield.

^ The wipers continue to operate even when the ignition is switched off.

^ The wipers only partially move when switched on.

^ Hazard warning lights flash permanently.

^ Vehicle locks and unlocks on its own.

^ Interior lights turn on by themselves.

^ The trunk lid cannot be opened.

[NEW] The following fault code may be stored in the FEM (Front Electronics Module): "804290 windshield wiper - reset contact short circuit to positive."

CAUSE
[NEW] FEM hardware sensitivity

PROCEDURE

1. Perform a vehicle diagnosis using ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application). If the fault listed above is stored in the FEM, proceed to the next step.

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: "Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger," please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.

2. Check the plug connections at the wiper motor, since it can cause the same situations listed above.

3. [NEW] If the plug connections are good, program the FEM with ISTA/P 2.47.5 or later.

[NEW] Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
