SUBJECT
REM: Various Electrical Faults in Rear of a Vehicle
MODEL
F30
Produced from June 30, 2011 to October 31, 2012
SITUATION
Various electrical faults associated with the rear of the vehicle occur, including one or more of the following:
^ The REM (Rear Electronic Module) does not respond to diagnosis.
^ The one-touch function of the rear power windows is inoperative.
^ The rear power windows cannot be initialized.
^ The trunk lid cannot be opened.
^ The brake lights are not working (check control message "Left/right brake light failed" is displayed).
^ The rear turn indicator lights are not working (check control message "Rear left/right turn indicator failed" is displayed).
One or more of the following faults are stored in the REM:
^ "804805 Internal software control unit fault"
^ "804876 Turn indicator, rear left, faulty"
^ "804877 Turn indicator, rear right, faulty"
^ "804872 Brake light, left, faulty"
^ "804874 Brake light, right, faulty"
^ "30195 Window regulator, passenger's side door, rear: invalid characteristic curve, no normalization present"
^ "30115 Power window, rear door on driver's side: invalid characteristic curve, no normalization present"
^ "301A0 Window regulator on passengers side door, rear: system is not normalized"
^ "30120 Power window, rear door on drivers side: system is not standardized"
CAUSE
Rear power window drive(s) faulty
PROCEDURE
1. Perform a vehicle test using ISTA. If the REM is not responding to diagnosis, proceed to the next step.
If the REM is responding to diagnosis, view the faults stored in the REM and proceed to step 4.
Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.
2. If the REM is not responding to diagnosis, a battery reset for at least 20 minutes must be performed. In order to gain access to the trunk, the trunk lid mechanical release cable must be used. The release cable can be accessed as follows:
^ In vehicles equipped with rear fold-down seats, you can access the trunk by folding down the rear seat center armrest and reaching into the trunk to release the fold-down seats.
^ In vehicles equipped with rear fixed seats, refer to ISTA Repair Instructions 51 46 001, "Removing and installing trim panel for storage shelf." Under the storage shelf is an access hole which will allow you to reach in and release the mechanical trunk latch.
3. Once the battery reset is completed, perform an individual control unit test on the REM as follows:
^ Highlight the REM on the vehicle test screen.
^ Select "Call up ECU Functions" and an individual control unit test is automatically done.
^ Close the REM control unit screen and read the fault memory stored in the REM.
4. Replace the left and/or right rear window lifter drives based on which of the REM faults is stored as mentioned in the situation above. Refer to ISTA Repair Instructions 67 62 020, "Removing and installing/replacing flat motor for rear left or right power window regulator."
Note:
Replacing the REM does not correct this situation.
