SUBJECT
Convertible Roof Leaking from the A-pillar Window Area
MODEL
F12 (6 Series Convertible)
Produced from March 2011
SITUATION
Water is leaking from the top of the A-pillar by the front door window.
CAUSE
Improper sealing between the A-pillar seal and the cowl panel seal (A), or between the cowl panel seal and the front door window (B)
A. Water is dripping into the vehicle from the from the top A-pillar seal, where it meets the roof side cowl panel seal.
B. Water ingress along the door window at the A-pillar area, showing visible water paths.
1. Inspect the front window adjustment and, if necessary, correct the adjustment using Repair Instructions 51 32 154, "Adjusting Front Left or Right Window." Then perform a leak test as shown. If the leak is still present, proceed to the next step.
2. Replace the front cowl seal using Repair Instructions 54 34 340 "Remove and Replace Cowl Panel Seal." The seal installation must be positioned correctly. The correct distance between the fastening point of the seal (1) and the corner trim strip (2) must be 28mm, as shown. After the seal is installed, it needs to be set in position by closing the top and both front windows for approximately 3 hours; then perform another leak test.
Repair procedure for leak type B
1. Inspect the front window adjustment and, if necessary, correct the adjustment using Repair Instructions 51 32 154 "Adjusting Front Left or Right Window," and then check the cowl seal measurements using Repair Instructions 54 34 340, "Remove and Replace Cowl Panel Seal." Perform a leak test as shown in the previous Step 1 for the Type A procedure. If the leak is present, check the alignment of the cowl seal and make sure it is parallel to the roof shell. If the seal is outward as shown, proceed to the next step. If the seal is inward, proceed to step 5.
2. Loosen the two outer bolts securing the seal to the terminating strip.
3. Pull the seal slightly off the terminating strip, as shown.
4. Work the seal inwards (left hand), and, at the same time, fit the seal back on to the terminating strip (right hand). When the seal is fitted correctly, proceed to the step 8.
5. If the seal is positioned too far inward, proceed to the next step.
6. Loosen the two outer bolts securing the seal to the terminating strip. To position the seal correctly, work the seal outwards (right hand), and at the same time fit the seal back on to the terminating strip (left hand).
7. Verify the seal position as being parallel to the roof shell.
8. Tighten the two securing bolts (previously loosened in Step 2) and torque to 4Nm. After the seal is adjusted, the seal needs to be set in position by closing the top and both front windows for approximately 3 hours; then perform another leak test.
