SUBJECT
Check Control Message "Automatic Headlight Adjustment Failed"

With option code 524 AHL (Adaptive Headlights)

SITUATION
One or more of the following Check Control Messages (CCM) will be displayed on the Central Information Display (CID):

^ Adaptive light system defective

^ Front left or right lighting system defective

^ Automatic headlight range adjustment defective

Additionally, one or more of the following symptoms may occur:

^ Both low-beam headlamps point in the downward direction.

^ The turn signal indicator in the KOMBI flashes rapidly.

CAUSE
Software error in the Footwell Module (FRM)

PROCEDURE
Do not replace parts.

1. Perform a vehicle test using ISTA and diagnose the faults related to the FRM listed above. If the test plan does not lead to the cause of the problem (no problem found), proceed to the next step.

2. Note: When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section. This documentation is not necessary when part of an approved Technical Service repair procedure; the battery charger is required to be attached before performing the Vehicle Test.

3. Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.48.1 or later.

New integration level: F001-12-11-503 or higher

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
